I posted in the ob/gyn forum as well, so forgive my redundancy, but I realized that my question is really about pathology, too.

My friend recently got a letter with the results of her cervical biopsy, and she got worried over the language of the actual lab report. I am still a premed, so I have no references other than what I can glean over the Internet. She's very scared over all of this, so I want to be able to explain at least some of it to reassure her while she waits to talk to her doctor.

Here is what the report said:

A. endocervix, curettage:
Scant minute benign fragments of endocervical epithelium with acute inflammation.

B. Cervix, biopsy
Fragment of cervical mucosa at the transformation zone with koilocytotic atypia and marked acute and chronic cervicitis.

A is pretty straightforward. From what I've gotten so far from my Internet searches, it sounds like she does have the HPV virus, but the abnormal cells are not pre-cancerous. The doctor didn't mention HPV in the letter, just said that she had "a non-specific inflammation of the glands of the cervix".

Can anyone explain the results a little better, so I can reassure her?

Your assessment is right on. She has inflammation of the cervix which may or may not be the result of infection (other than HPV). She also has evidence of infection with human papilloma virus but no evidence of any precancerous lesions (i.e.- dysplasia). HPV is only one of many factors invovled in the genesis of cervical cancer. In fact, Robbins says "A high percentage of young women are infected with one or more HPV types during their reproductive years and only a few develop cancer." So reassure your friend that there's nothing major to worry about at this point. Just tell her to make sure she's dillingent about yearly pap and pelvics and to practice safe sex.

BCMD, thanks for your reply. I passed the info along and hopefully it will help ease her mind.

Wow, look what a good doctor I'd make! 🙂

LOL
