So I'm currently in verification purgatory right now, and expect to get completely verified somewhere around September. I started late as I was insecure about my qualifications after reading too much student doctor and was convinced otherwise by a well-meaning family. I am currently prewriting my secondaries. I do have a preference for the midwest, but will probably be only applying to 1 DO school (Des Moines).

Relevant information include
  • Minnesota resident
  • MCAT 31 (10V/10B/11P)
  • GPA: 3.7
  • Biochemistry Degree and Philosophy minor
Extracurriculars include
  • Around 500 hours of academic research
  • Around 500 hours of biotech research with presentation
  • Around 700-800 hours of helping coordinate surgical pathology with tissue needs of scientists
  • Started ER Scribing at May with about 400-500 hours so far
  • Around 150 hours of volunteering with Shriners hospital interacting with patients, parents, siblings and helping staff events, with soon to be shadowing of Orthopedists
  • Around 20 hours of teaching basic 1st aid not including planning of events
  • A semester as treasurer of new student organization that attempts to bring scientific literature into layman terms (Not sure if fluff)
  • misc. things like being in the university technology committee, and classical guitar, etc.
LORs include (with all confirming letters of strong quality)
  • DO physician
  • Chair of Philosophy
  • Organic chemistry professor
  • Biotech manager with PhD, and other academic qualifications
  • Biology professor
Applying to
  • University of Minnesota - Twin Cities
  • University of North Dakota
  • University of Wisconsin (unsure about being considered instate due to reciprocity)
  • Rosalind Franklin
  • University of Louisville
  • Creighton
  • Medical college of Wisconsin
  • Temple
  • Drexel
  • Rush
  • Loyola (my MCAT is a bit low)
  • Mayo (Dad will be paying for this one)
Essentially, the question is whether or not I am still in the running for this cycle.

I am also looking for other OOS schools with tuition rates <60,000/year.

Your list looks good. If you can be complete before the middle of September, then you should be a little later than average which is enough to give you a shot, maybe not a great one, but a shot nonetheless.

I know a guy who has your exact same stats, was complete in October, got 4 interview invites, waitlisted for 3 schools, and finally got off the waitlist a month before medical school started. I know n=1 but that's still not a bad cycle for someone who was even later than you are.

you have to eat mayo sandwich for the next couple months if you want a real shot at Mayo.

It's what we're all doing. Trust me, I'm premed.

yeah my dad is adamant that I apply to Mayo as he tells me "I've got nothing to lose"

I see 8 or 9 schools on your list where you have a chance for an interview. It would be good to apply more broadly and add at least another 6 schools. Possibilities would be St. Louis, Oakland Beaumont, Western Michigan, Jefferson, Hofstra, New York Medical College, Albany, Quinnipiac.

Could you indicate which schools I do not have a chance for besides Mayo? I was initially trying to avoid certain schools because of indicated tuition cost, but further research shows that ending debt is a bit more nuanced than what may be indicated on the school's website. Essentially, I had the notion that I would rather apply again next cycle than having to pay 75,000+/year for tuition.

Also, I would appreciate some input from any Adcoms that are reading this if possible just for some "closer to the source" advice or support of items already indicated. Of course, nobody is required to; just asking.

Louisville and Wisconsin are state schools that accept few OOS applicants with MCAT of 31. You would have a chance for an interview at all the schools I listed. The key is to accumulate interviews. The more interviews you receive the more likely that one school will accept you.
