MCAT 33 (PS 14, VR 8, BS 11)
cGPA 3.7 (science is similar)

Volunteer:
- 20 hours at hospital in pediatric oncology dept.
- 10 hours American Red Cross Blood Drives
- 10 hours Ronald McDonald House
- 5 day clinical mission trip in Panama
- Vice President of Student Club that raises money for hospital to buy ipads
- 50 hours in a neurology lab (only research experience)

Physician shadowing:
- 10 hours family practice
- 5 hours orthopedic surgeon
- 5 hours geriatric neurologist

Employment:
-Worked throughout school at the football stadium as an Event Coordinator, providing customer service, etc.

I was expecting a much higher MCAT score. I plan on retaking it at the beginning of August and should do better (Was getting 41s, 42s on practice exams so hopefully I can get at least a 36). I also have a job lined up in the OR department at the University hospital as a tech. I will start this in January.

Should I even bother applying this cycle? I put it off until I got my first MCAT scores back at the beginning of this month. I decided that I wanted to retake it and still haven't applied. I could get my application in by the end of this week (July 14) but I am thinking I might just wait until next years cycle because I will have a better MCAT score, experience working in a hospital, and will have more time to work on the other aspects of my application as well. Could my application be strong enough to go for it now? Or do I wait it out?

Thanks everyone.

Get your app in ASAP and apply with a 33. If you score higher on your next MCAT then update schools with the new MCAT score.

Low hrs of pt contact ECs (you need to at least double them) and good but imbalanced MCAT score concern me. I think it might be worth taking this cycle on the chin to see what you can accomplish, because a 33 MCAT is still nothing to sneeze at, and your GPAs are stellar. In the mean time, you can build up the EC bona fides. I've seen people rejected for similar or less involvement with patients, so that's the thing you should be boning up.

I fear that any MCAT retake will result in similar or lower scores....it seems, that at least for the people who report them, that actual scores are always lower than practice ones.

Right now aim for low-medium tier schools.

With an extra year of good EC and a re-take you'll go from 100% reject to potentially a top-10 contender. I'd wait.

Highly doubtful...

Sorry OP, but you don't really have any research, little clinical experience, sparse nonclinical experience, no leadership, and no long-tern involvements. It's hard to get into a top-10 school with those maladies.

You may be able to get a mid or low tier acceptance this year assuming you get into a clinical job soon and send everything in ASAP.

I would like to stay within Michigan, Illinois, Virginia, or the Carolinas. What schools should I apply to? Should I bother with top programs such as U of M, Duke, UNC, etc.?

Duke and U of M would be long shots but you've got a chance at UNC.

Are you a NC resident? If not then UNC can be impossible to get into. Wake Forest on the other hand might like you.

In all honesty though I would wait, with your job starting in January you'll have so much more to include on your next app.
