The rule of thumb is never talk about academics. UCR even says don't talk about the MCAT.
but then my insurance decided not to cover it.
Ah, don't you just love insurance companies? Jokes aside, always pick the treatment because health is wealth. Even if you're in debt, at least you're alive and there are plenty of programs for helping low-income patients. You just need to google them.

I like 1 better than 2. 2 isn't really a challenge, just a situation where you fixed a team problem.

What is the prompt?

How do your options fit the following scheme?
  • Situation
  • Challenge
  • Approach
  • Results
  • Evaluation
The first option feels better, but your approach basically sounds like a shotgun approach and you were fortunate to find a program to help you pay for the costs.

The second option involves teamwork to deal with a more eager peer. I'm okay with it, but I don't get the sense of urgency that gives me a sense you can really take on challenges with higher stakes.

Thank you for your response! The question format is:
  • Personal challenge
  • How it influenced personal growth
  • Evaluation and how it will be used to navigate challenges in medical school and in the future.
  • Support systems/ resources used
I do agree with you on the shotgun approach, I definitely did get lucky to find the program, but it took a lot of asking to figure out because it was something new to me. I could keep thinking of other options but most of my challenges are first gen related like falling behind in school because I was an ESOL kid, so I struggled significantly with that. However this doesn't feel like a challenge worth noting honestly.
