Hello everyone!

TI would like some opinions on my chances for DO schools.

cGPA 3.405
sGPA (don't know how to calculate)
Allied Health major, Gerontology minor (Junior year now)

Volunteering
2 week trip to Ghana, West Africa to provide medical relief for community members in a village. I got to shadow doctors while they diagnosed and prescribed medication. I also worked in the triage and dental stations
I have a volunteered at a senior day care center
I also volunteered as a tutor for an elementary school student

Work Experience
I currently work at the clinical laboratory at my school's infirmary where I handle specimen and run rapid tests, streak plates with specimen, etc.

Research
Last summer I did a research program funded by the NIH/NIDDK for 10 weeks and did a few poster presentations

Lastly I have my nursing assistant certification from high school but I have never worked with it

I am taking a review course for the MCAT and will be doing another one in the summer before I take it in August. I hope to score above a 30.

With all this information, what may be my chances? And should I consider a year off? Thank you.

It depends on the sGPA, but I'm guessing it'll be above a 3.2. You calculate it just like cGPA, but you only use science courses (not math, humanities, social sciences, arts, etc.).

If you get a 30 or above on the MCAT, you will be very competitive for DO, especially if your GPA is >3.2. Just make sure you get a DO letter of recommendation.

Also, this should be in the WAMC (what are my chances) forum.

Chances excellent, unless sGPA is <3.0

Do well on the MCAT and grab good LORs now (including a D.O., which can be a pain to find) and apply this cycle if you feel personally ready. Continue to gain clinical volunteering experience for the next year and continue to update schools.

Good luck👍

That link was very helpful thank you! I didn't know you can update schools about continued clinical experience. How do I go about that? I am also planning on pursuing research during my senior year after my application has been submitted. How do I contact the school to update them about this?

Get above 27 on the MCAT and you should be fine.

Some schools will let you update via their secondary site. Otherwise, just email admissions.

Ditto to all those saying a 27+ on the MCAT. As for the DO rec letter, try your best to get one. Some schools require a DO rec letter and others strongly prefer it. I was fortunate during this cycle to receive multiple acceptances without a DO rec letter.

Chances are excellent!
