Hi everyone, hope you all are doing good. I am new to this forum. I am a TX resident, looking to apply to MD, DO and joint programs, this summer and take my MCAT June end. I just wanted to get some opinions from people who can provide some insight on my circumstances and what they think my chances are.

I began my undergraduate degree in a Canadian university (5 years ago) and due to documented medical circumstances I was forced to come home. I was unable to withdraw from the classes because to be honest, it was the last thing on my mind, and being 17 I never thought of this being a serious issue. Anyways, I got 5 F's (NON SCIENCE COURSES). I came back home and the next summer I started my undergraduate degree at my in state school. I graduated with a 3.65 overall with a degree in Biological and Physical Sciences. I had a 0.7 GPA first semester in Canada.. so taking this holistically, I had a huge upward trend.

When factoring my 3.65 and 0.7 GPA.. I end up with a 3.26 roughly.
I have a strong upward trend with 17-19 hours/credits each semester.
200 hours of oral cancer research at the oral cancer department at the UT Health Science Center School of Dentistry
800 hours of shadowing/assisting healthcare professionals
100 hours helping doctors in 7 developing European countries
200 hours STEM tutor for underserved inner city schools
And service learning projects
Part time jobs each semester

So my question is.. is it worth applying if I get a 508+ MCAT score? I have already given my LOR resume and things to my biochemistry and physics professors as well as my research PI. If anyone would be kind enough to give me insight and tips as to where to apply, what else to do, and any other valuable pieces of information, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you for your time and have a wonderful day 🙂

@doc2be22 It's not impossible to get in, especially if you score decently well on MCAT. Osteopathic schools might give you a chance, but your GPA will hold you back for allopathic schools unless you are URM. Taking the MCAT in end of June is kind of a setback, since you will have to wait a bit to apply and as such won't be applying as early as possible.

What year are you in undergrad? If you are a junior and still have a semester or more left, I would recommend working your butt off and bringing up your GPA as much as possible before applying. There's no shame in putting off your application a year if it grants you the ability to become more competitive. Also, it would give you the opportunity to rack up more hours in volunteering. (Although, your EC do seem to be a strong part of your app)

Hope that helps!

A post-bac may also be a viable option to raise your GPA

My GPA was was about the same with a 508 MCAT (I am a Texas resident). I had one in-state school interview and it wasn't TCOM. Your best bet will be OOS DO schools (and UIW).

Also, for reference, I had 9 interview invites for 12 OOS DO schools I applied to. Non-trad with significant healthcare experience.

Thanks everyone for your opinion. Unfortunately, @avhopeful I am a senior 🙁. So I don't have many classes left. I am open to applying everywhere .. and I just started studying for the mcat. So June end is my best bet because I really wanna do well. So I'm in a pickle now 🙁

Meant to add - your GPA has a pretty significant (from what you described) upward trend. I still think your chances are ok for TX schools if do you well on your MCAT.

Thanks so much FCMike11 that really motivates me to do well on the mcat. I really wanna apply to all DO schools this cycle and see what happens.

MD schools are not off limits to you if you can rock the MCAT. Do NOT take it until your are confident you are ready to score the top score that is possible for you. You should get some attention for DO schools with a 508+. Texas residency should help. I come from a smaller, colder state, so I don't know much about Texas admissions.

My gpa was lower than yours and for very similar reasons. A strong upward trend and solid MCAT can show you aren't your 17 year old self anymore.

Thank you every one for your invaluable insight. I just wanted to add that since those were non science courses my SGPA will be around 3.5. If that helps my app any way further. So as a recap: My 120 credits for my degree are 3.65. My SGPA appx 3.4-3.5. It was just that one semester of 5 F's and medical issue that is holding me back 🙁

We're all rooting for you @doc2be22. Make sure to own your upward trend in your app!
