My cGPA: 3.22, sGPA: 3.14

Does anyone know if I can get in with these stats. I really don't care what school it is, I just want to begin Dental School. Not to mention I am beginning my Masters in Biomedical Sciences in couple days, which I am very confident I will keep +3.7 g.p.a. The only problem that brought my undergraduate gpa down is I was working full time so I would not be in debt prior to dental school and help with the family bills. I have many shadowing and volunteering hours. I have researched for a whole year in my undergrad, and had two papers scientifically published. I am considered a minority. I don't know what else to say, I am a first generation college graduate with parents who have not went to highschool. I applied for disadvantaged student as well. If any of you know of someone who has been accepted with similar stats please let me know what schools I have a chance with. Thank you so much and any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Of course you have a shot! The GPA is a bit below Avg (which is like 3.4ish I think)...but your DAT is solid across the board. I think if you apply broadly you'll definitely get interviews, but I'm not sure if you are on a tight budget or not. It will cost a lot of money to apply, go to interviews, etc, but hey if you get interviews your future might be bright!

your URM status should help, too.

You can probably sell that story on your PS or interview. Working full time and maintaining good grade is not easy. If you don't get lucky this cycle, after you complete your biomedical masters, you could get in for sure. So it really comes down to whether you want to "try it out " this cycle, or save the money and apply more confidently to more schools with your new graduate grades.

Yeah I don't want to waste another year, so I guess I will have to apply. Do you know any schools I might get lucky at?:xf:

I am trying it out hoping for the best :xf:

So no interview yet 🙁

Maybe they are waiting for your academic update?

To me it doesn't make sense that you didn't receive any interview(Assuming you applied broadly). You applied a little late and your gpa is a bit low but your dat scores are good. The fact that you are URM and have research experience is a big plus.

Is there any possible red flag in hour app??

No not at all. My Academic Update was received November 29, and sent December 12. I am having bad luck. Like everything in my application essay wise is perfect, my Masters fall gpa was a 3.6. I do have some schools that did not reject me but put me under review, but is it too late for now? Or are they waiting for my winter quarter grades?

Thanks I really really hope so! It would be really sad if I don't. Its my second cycle.

I honestly can't see why you didn't get invited... :/ Your stats a good (and you have a great upward trend on your GPA, I'm guessing) and you have a good research gig going. Perhaps it's something outside of your stats? Personal statement? Letters? Not trying to offend you, but maybe your EC's aren't as good as what they've seen among the applicant pool?

Dont give up yet! Your stats are similar to mine if not better and I just got an interview invite from Houston

I have over 150 hours of dental volunteering with 2 general dentists and 1 specialized. I have over 10,000 hours of work I was doing during college. I have 270 hours of research experience. 40 or more hours volunteering with disabled children. And 60 hours of community volunteering at local church. Personal Letter I have revised it like 23 times with the help of college professors who have complimented me on it. I just don't understand 🙁

That is good for you, I am pretty sure you were in the same position as me. Well I wish you the best luck on your interview and I hope you do get accepted! You only need one, plus the dental school at Houston is awesome. I would of applied there if I was a competitive applicant, which apparently I am not.

It's definitely not your EC. I only worked at nursing home, had 40 hrs of hospital volunteer and predental club and 100 hrs of shadowing.

I don't have the most amazing stats either (19aa) and I'm not urm.
I still got 6 predec and 1 post

Who knows what adcoms are looking for...

🙁 I think all of us are stumped... I sincerely hope you hear good news soon. If not this time, definitely the next. Third times the charm, right?

Don't lose hope, I received a few interview invites post-december. Schools are still inviting people so keep your fingers crossed.

I'm going to be blunt--there has got to be some red flag in your application. I'd understand there being a fluke with 1 or 2 schools, but all 15? No way. Even though you did apply late, you seem to have a whole lot going for your application. Your ECs and work experience are stellar, your DAT is solid, and your GPA really isn't that unusual.

Since this is the second time you're applying, did you ever contact any schools last year to see what you could do to improve your application? If not, you really need to do that. It's the only thing I can think of, since we are all clearly at a loss here.

I'm sorry this is happening!!

Hi, yes last year I have contacted the schools and they said my g.p.a is the only problem. They said to complete a Masters program to prove I am able to handle graduate courses. I have done that received a 3.7 on my first quarter. I am not sure if I have to complete it before they even consider me? 6 of the 15 have flat out rejected me. 3 says application complete. The rest are under review. I will get both interviews at MWU but I was hoping somewhere else would consider me somewhat worthy of an interview. This is really frustrating because I do have guaranteed interviews at both MWU, yet it's not a guaranteed acceptance. And honestly I really don't want to have to go through a third cycle. I have put so much money on applications its ridiculous. Plus I took a loan for the Masters program and every loan has a 6 month grace period, which after the 6 months are over if I am not enrolled in school I have to start making monthly payments, which I cannot afford. 🙁

When were your post december interviews? Aren't they supposed to contact you like 2 weeks before and the last month for interviews at most schools is February. Which means the latest they will be sending out interview invites would be in these next weeks.

Yeah it is really frustrating. Was your gpa high? Maybe GPA is the major player in deciding for an interview. I mean I worked full time throughout college with full time classes, does that account for anything. Or maybe they don't care.

yeah (3.99) and I took around 14-15 credits/semester. But if you take a look around this forum there are tons of people that have similar stats as you and had no problem getting interviews. It is just so strange that you didn't get ANY interviews with the amount of schools you applied to.

Yeah a 3.99 I would understand why they would pick you. Ugh it is the g.p.a I guess I should have took out loans and payed more attention to college 🙁 It would have been the same since I took out a loan for my Masters.

It really depends on the schools when their last interviews are. Some schools interview after Feb. for seats and some interview for wait list spots. It just depends what school you are talking about. I have received invites from right after december 2 to as recent as 2 days ago so they can come at any time. You may hear from schools though in the coming weeks.

This 250 weeks of full time work, aka almost 5 years of 40 hours a week. Did you really do this while you went to school? If not, maybe it was a red flag that you were exaggerating on your app? If you did, I apologize for calling you out...it just seems like an obscene amount of work to do while earning a degree.

Yeah that doesn't look right..I had a total of about 4200 work hours and even that felt way overboard with reasonable courseload. You sure you did the math right on those hours? Lol

Come on guys, you seriously think dental schools won't interview you because you over-exaggerate your work hours? that seems pretty stupid...

Really? You think schools choosing to interview students based on ethics to enter a profession based on ethics seems 'pretty stupid'?

And just to clarify, I am NOT trying to say the OP is lying...just that the work hours are exceptionally high and if your resume doesn't support these hours schools may have been skeptical.

missed a NOT in there!

YES I do. dental schools are not gonna nitpick every single thing on your application. You don't think she could have possibly put down the hours by mistake? adcoms are not close-minded like you dude...

you seriously think adcoms are going to sit down and look at your schedule and calculate if it is possible for someone to work 'x' amount of hours??

lol i dont know what to say to you man...

No actually it wasn't 40 hours a week, it was 50-60 hours a week. It's sad yes that I had to work that much but it was my uncle's business and he trusted me to manage it. I had to do many tasks and as many times as I wanted to quit, my dad would convince me to stay to help family out. Trust me I wish I was lying, but the tax forms are out there to prove I am not. This is my main reason that really affected my g.p.a.

There is no need to lie, I don't like to judge people I don't know. And I don't think anyone could have handled my course load and my full time work schedule. But thank you for your opinion!

If this is the case, then what you have done is very impressive. I do not know why you aren't having more luck with the application cycle but it's not over yet! Doing the masters is the best thing you could do it seems

Sorry to you for doubting you, you have worked an exceptional amount and it was the only thing in your app that looked off to me, which is why I thought it could be a red flag.

Please know that I had a typo in what I wrote last night, what I intended to say was:

I edited my post, but again sorry for mistyping and accusing you of lying. Please notice that the sentence I wrote only makes sense with the 'not' in there, so know it really was a typo.

I know I'm stepping in, but I do think this is feasible. I trust the OP about her hours, but a number like 10,000 is going to cause a second look. I'd assume that other things would, too, such as putting down that you have 1,000 hours that are purely shadowing or something like that. Such things are an anomaly, and it honestly doesn't take that long to figure up what kind of weekly commitment that would be. It could raise an eyebrow, but I'm sure that other parts of your application make the truth of the hours apparent.

For example, I put down what could seem like an exorbitant amount of hours for one of my activities, but that same activity comprised the backbone of my personal statement. Otherwise, I'm sure they would have been intrigued, LOL!

It's ok thanks that "not" makes a big difference. I was just feeling down and then that just made me feel even worst but thank you and I really do hope that I get in. I am not sure if I stressed it enough in my personal statement just because my pre-dental advisor said to not sound like your complaining or making up excuses, so I slightly mentioned it which may have some committees red flagging it as you have said. It's just they never ask me or at least let me provide them with proof. I even asked for an app review last year, and they said it's just the gpa 🙁 Ill just wait and see and if not most likely apply again but to fewer schools who actually considered me and put me under review.

I mean, if you are guaranteed an interview at the MWU schools, as long as you don't butcher the interview I feel like you have a really decent shot at getting in?
I mean (from my own personal experience this cycle), it only takes one!

So just keep hanging in there.

Maybe just mention that you worked for five years full-time while going to school? Is that possible?
