Hi everyone!
I’m currently a (credit-wise) Junior. My stats are listed below:
sGPA: 2.493
cGPA: 3.065
3 W’s on transcript (2 in Organic Chemistry I, 1 in Genetics)
I received C’s and D’s in Chemistry and Physics my freshman year (Retook 1 of 3 classes. Received a C+ after getting a D. Will be retaking the other 2 this summer)
I will be taking my MCATS in August.

Volunteer Work:
-Certified EMT-B, worked as a volunteer on my campus. (200 hours and still counting)
-Certified CPR Instructor, worked as a volunteer and certified 100 people so far.
-Was the PR Coordinator for the EMS program on campus
-Proctor for the EMT class (3 years)
-Worked as a volunteer at a non-profit organization that focused on Immigration Reform and the DREAM Act (150 hours)
-Started an anti-sex trafficking ministry at my church
-Youngest member of a Korean Literature Society in my city

Since I began college, I worked 3 part-time jobs as a waitress, nanny, and tutor to pay for my tuition on my own. My family has always struggled financially and I had to pay for some of the bills while working and studying. I have been a part time student since freshman year (averaging 10-11 credit hours per semester). I took a 2 year break after sophomore year to work as a full time nanny because I had to pay down my tuition (as much as I was working, I couldn’t pay all of it off while attending school). I came back to school this past fall and have been working to improve my GPA. I know my application needs a lot of work (hospital volunteer hours, shadowing, higher GPA), but I was wondering if I could get advice on what I can do specifically to better my chances of getting into DO/MD schools and if I’ll even have a chance? And also, will doing a SMP improve my chances substantially?

Chances are not good.... You GPAs are low for both MD/DO. You should continue retaking classes and try to get B or higher on them until you can get you GPAs to 3.2+, then take the MCAT. You should be ok for DO with a 26+ MCAT score. MD will be a LONG shot.

Agree with temp101. Do grade replacement and DO looks good if you can get that 25+. Don't get too discouraged. Also, no offense, but if you had 2 W's in orgoI, if they were related to content, maybe hold off on taking MCAT so soon. But wow, your work ethic is outstanding.

Thank you both for your honest responses! Would it help my chances at DO if I take a SMP? Also, I was going to take the MCAT in 2015 but someone advised me not to take the new test. Do you think it will be as hard as people are saying it will be?

I don't know, it is a hard choice to make but if you aren't ready for this one you aren't ready, have you done any preparation?

I have started studying, but I am a little nervous about taking the exam in August. I heard mixed advice on whether or not 5-6 months is enough time to prepare for it.

I'm a little rusty on Chem, but Bio and Physics are okay. I haven't taken a practice test yet. I started studying last week after receiving the previous mentioned advice.

Don't spend too long on content review, I made that mistake at first; i didn't spend enough time practicing the handling of the test, which is mega important. You maybe should take a practice or practice sections or something

Will definitely do that! Thank you so much for your quick responses! They've been very helpful!

No problem, I know I would want the same thing done for me. Good luck.

As of right now, chances are zero at any medical school. You need to get that sGPA >3.0. Quickest way to do that is to retake any F/D/C science coursework and utilize AACOMAS' grade replacement policy. Doing well in an SMP will boost chances significantly, along with acing MCAT. developing better time mgt skills will be crucial to your success.

You gotta get that GPA above 3.0. Until then your chances are basically non existent

I agree with Goro completely. Applying with your current stats would be a waste of time, and you still need to take your MCAT.

I was in your situation before applying, so don't worry. You're not alone. Study really hard for the MCAT and take lots of practice exams/questions. You won't need to retake science classes to get your sGPA above a 3.0, because that would take forever. Your cGPA is already above a 3.0, any retaking of undergrad courses would only lead to an incremental improvement and would be a complete waste of time.

Advice in a nutshell: take the MCAT, rock it, go the SMP route, rock it, and you'll even have a shot at a USMD.
