I am taking the MCAT next April (04), and was planning on applying June 1; however, I think I am going to actually get to go to the Himalayas with a doctor group that helps a village every summer (not this summer because of the war). Okay, this really isnt a problem and I am praying that it works out, but there is a small downside. How much will this effect my chances? I know there isn't a huge difference between applying June 1 and August 1, but I still would like to maximize my chances. I really hope I am not coming off as one of those braggards who says what he/she has for a EC, but I dont know whats the best choice of action. I would go on this trip even if wouldn't be able to attend medical school because this is a truly a once in a lifetime type of thing. What should I do? Any advice is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

as long as you can get your amcas app in at the beginning of june, it really shouldn't make a difference if you're out of the country for a while in the summer.

i was an august mcater so was not complete until october at some schools. being late is a disadvantage, but i don't think it's that late if you complete your secondaries in august/september.
the important thing is to get that amcas primary in b/c the longer you wait, the more people there are to be verified & the longer it will take.

Turn in your amcas before you leave or finish it and have someone turn it in. If you get back in august, you wont really lose anytime cause thats when secondaries start coming in.

thanks for the advice, I just want to maximize my chances of getting and, and I figured this would be the best place to ask what to do.

You can completely prepare your AMCAS in May, and do everything except press the submit button. If you give your log-in information to a friend or family member you trust, he/she can do that last step for you.

I agree w/ everyone else- and be sure to include the himalaya thing in your activity section on the AMCAS before you leave, it's going to look great on an application and help you stand out
