Hey guys, sorry to make another of these threads but SDN has just been so helpful in the past! The choices I make in the next few weeks are some of the most important I will make in my life so I'm going to be pretty thorough here; I'm sorry if I bore you with the details! I'm making a list of schools to apply to but my finances are extremely tight so I need to keep it as short as possible while still feeling confident of at least one acceptance. I'm a Florida resident. My stats:
Overall GPA: 3.2
Science GPA: 3.6
BCP GPA: 3.8
Things to consider about my GPA: My overall GPA is lacking because of a bad first year. My family and I had to overcome a lot of emotional trauma that year and I actually wrote about the growth I've made since then in my personal statement. This is possibly the weakest part of my application but I feel like I have very good reasons to back it. Thankfully that year I only took--and bombed--one science course (environmental biology, not even a biggie) so my science and BCP GPAs are safe.
You should also know that I dropped out of college for a year after my freshman year to deal with said family issues. When I was ready to start back up, no big university would take me and my rockin' 1.9 GPA so I went to a small 4 year institution that is nowhere near the prestige of a big university, which I'm aware some schools do consider. I transferred to UF as a senior this summer and will finish my last year of upper division courses here. After this summer I will still have physics 2 and micro as uncompleted prerequisites. I'm taking them in the fall.

Work and Extracurriculars:
-Worked in a hospital as a patient sitter for a year. I basically sat with very unruly patients and had to keep them calm for 12 hours.
-Tutored chemistry for a year.
-President of the chemistry club for one semester.
-Long time tennis player with USTA tournament experience.
-Intramural volleyball and tennis.
-Volunteer tennis coach for two summers. Basically Flagler College has tennis camps every summer and I worked with kids that were too young/inexperienced to play with the big groups. ~150 hours total (this is my only volunteering experience and the last camp I did was like two years ago
).
-Shadowed for ~50 hours with one GP. I'd like to increase that number, don't know if I'll be able to.
Manual Dexterity:
-Sculpting
-Drawing
-Painting
-Prep cook at a restaurant in high school.
-Origami
Alright so here's the list of schools I'm currently weighing. Schools with a * are my dream schools.
UF*
UPenn*
Columbia*
Pitt
Maryland
Case
NYU
Yeah, it's a short list. My family is really struggling financially so I can't let that list get crazy, but I will definitely add some schools if anyone has good suggestions. What should I add? Drop? What are my chances for each? Note I didn't add the schools that are grouchy about community college courses because I took many prerequisites there. I also can't some schools if they have a minimum GPA (Nova).
Thanks everyone here at SDN 🙂 The information I've gained here has been immeasurable in my whole journey to dental school!
