I am currently a 2nd year Genetics PhD student who really really wants to go to medical school. I am 24 and will be applying the admissions cycle following the upcoming one when I am 26. My UGPA is pretty poor, 3.1. I was wondering how high I would need to get to stand a chance at getting into CCOM. I know its a strech to say the least. I was thinking around 34. Anyone else???

I'm finishing my Ph.D. My undergrad GPA overall was 3.4 with science GPA around 3.5. My MCAT was 26. I got accepted at CCOM. I am now 27. I think you'll be fine. Take April MCAT and apply early.

A 34? ummm... take a look at their averages, and you'll find this is probably a good deal higher than you will probably need.

I would call the admissions office. they will surely give you the information that you are looking for. I am currently an MS1, and I think our mean was a 3.45, and our science gpa was right there as well. Just give them a quick call they will surely fill you in!!!

Good luck!

I thought I would need such a high score to compensate for my extremely low (3.1) GPA. I just want to be realistic about going to medical school and have been told by many that with a 3.1 i will never ever go to medical school.

Hoosier DO - are you an IU alumn?

is your ugpa low because you had to retake some classes? If you retook classes, remember that your gpa is ONLY calculated with the latest grade. THis means if you took a class and failed, and retook it and got an A, only the A will be calculated in the gpa (however, both grades are on the transcript).

No, my GPA is just plain low. I never failed any classes. I had a 2 poor semesters where I got a couple C+s in physical chem and Analytical Chem

Minimum cut off at CCOM is 2.75 or so. I wouldn't worry about your GPA too much since it is above the minimum, and they also look beyond numbers.

I emailed some schools when I wanted to know the average MCAT score and GPA for students they accepted (not minimums or applicants - acceptances). Most replied.

You can also check out www.medschoolstats.com which has the same info (acceptance averages). I thought it was pretty handy, especially comparing schools.
