Being a New York resident, I currently have a 3.5 overall (exactly) and a 3.2 science GPA, with a slight upward trend. I hope to increase both by application time this summer. I'll be finishing up physics sequence next year and graduate in 2015.

I'm planning on taking the DAT and applying in August of this summer.

I have shadowed an oral surgeon for over 100+ hours, volunteered 100+ hours, and also occasionally do community service at a place of worship.

So, where do I stand, and what do I need to improve on? 🙂

Haven't you already posted this exact thread before?

I think its pretty good. The fact that you only shadowed an os is kind of worrying tho. How come you didn't shadow gp? Kill the DAT and you should have a very good chance

I got the permission to shadow at an oral surgery clinic from the supervisor who's an oral surgeon, but they also have general dentists there who I've shadowed occasionally... do you think it'd hinder my chances if I get a LOR from the oral/maxillofacial surgeon instead of the general dentists?

and yeah I'm going to try to have a 3.55 oGPA and 3.25 by applying time, and hopefully get 20s+ across the test.. hopefully *prays*

Your chances are just okay but a strong DAT will help you. They will like you more if you show interest by calling and emailing.

Getting an LOR from a specialist is fine. Mine was also from a specialist. Just make sure to mention that you've shadowed a gp in the app. Also try to target ~100hrs for gp shadowing if its possible. You'll have tons of opportunities to shadow omfs in NYU anyways.
For DAT, don't worry. Getting over 20 isn't so hard. If you put in a month or two, 22~23 is easy to get.

Thanks, I'll def. keep that in mind.

How did you study for the PAT, I'm most worried about that section

Yeah :/ I hope to raise my GPA even higher by the time of application, I just need to make straight As lol. And how would you recommend emailing and calling them, say NYU; how should I go about approaching them? Should I just email saying I would like to attend or is there a certain protocol?
