Is there any data out there on chances of admission based on when either the primary application or secondary applications were submitted? Last year I submitted my primary late August, and I finished my secondaries in October. I only got one interview (rejected). Next year I am planning to apply as early as possible with the addition of research experience that I was lacking the first time. Will this significantly increase my chances of admission?

Depends on your stats. Good stats benefit at better schools, borderlines might land an extra II, but below-avg stats are still below-avg.

3.28 GPA and 36 MCAT. So one below average and one above average (for almost all schools).

Normally I'd tell you that you're unlikely to get into MD w/ a 3.28 regardless of early/late app, but I saw that you're a vet. Did you serve in the active forces, esp overseas? From what I've gathered through the years, that helps tremendously.

I was active duty Army, and I deployed to Afghanistan for a year. I'm also married with a 10 year old if that sort of experience helps me in any way.

It does, non-trads w/ life stories get benefited for sure. I'm very surprised you only got 1 II then. If you applied ASAP this time, you should have more luck. (P.S.-Did you apply "smartly" i.e. avoid OOS public schools, overloading on reaches, etc? Honestly puzzled how your app only got one second look. If you check the forums here vets usually have a ton of success).

The only interview I got was from University of Washington (In state). After my rejection I spoke with the dean of admissions about my application, and she said that my GPA wasn't a problem for them. There were three major things: No research experience, no clinical LOR, and my essays didn't convince them that I had the proper motivations to become a physician. I work at a medical research lab now (I might be able to get published before my application next year), I have a clinical LOR now, and I've rewritten most of my essays. I'm assuming that all of that was factored in along with the late application (if that matters that much).

Ah, I see. Well in that case, you should definitely expect more success (especially the essay part, if you changed whatever was concerning in that).
