Hey guys,

New to this forum, but I have been following closely for a couple of months.
Seeing as this is application time for a lot of you though, I thought I'd ask a few questions to see if you might have some insight.

I'm currently studying at McGill University in Montreal,Canada and majoring in Microbiology & Immunology. I'm interested in applying into medicine for 2007. Seeing as I'm not American, I'd like to know what you guys think my chances are.

My academic stats are:

GPA: 3.96
MCAT: 33Q

-Will be doing honors thesis starting Fall 2006
-Received an in-course scholarship
-Golden Key member

Extra-curriculars/Jobs:

-10 week shadowing program when I was in my last year of high school, shadowed doctors once a week for 5 hours in various departments.
- Worked at a camp for disabled children Summer 2003, was a counsellor with 2 other counsellors and took care of a cabin of 10 guys with various disabilities (CP, spina bifida, autism etc...).
- Participated in a summer volunteer program in 2004 2 x 8hrs per week doing two volunteer shifts in different hospitals.
- Worked in research Summer '05 doing some basic medical record analysis in clinical epidemiology to determine if doctors were giving prophylaxis for TB in patients infected with HIV.
- Currently volunteer at a HIV Drop-In resource center once a week for 5 hours where I meet with people infected HIV to have random discussions about anything.
- Will be doing research this summer with a research grant and a professor in Biochemical Virology involving HIV RT.
- Kaplan MCAT Prof (Phys sci)

So there it is... What do you think my chances are? I'm looking at applying to GW/Georgetown as they don't seem to discriminate against Canadian applicants. Would I be likely to get in or at least get an interview?

Thanks so much guys, really appreciate it.

I am not an admin, but you look great on paper.

Same as the other reponse, I'm not an adcom.
But after applying this year, I'd say you have a great chance.
Here are some pointers (If you'd like):

-Really focus on your essays. I think most people do not put enough emphasis on this. It is a very important part of your applycation. My last advisor (prof at a med school) said that med apps personal statement (PS) could be divided into three categories: Strong PS that help your app (very few students), so-so PS that will not make a diffference (the majority) and bad ones that will hurt your app ( very few).
So write one that will put you at the top.
Write the best you can and review it over and over.
Then
Have other people (yes, plural) review it, like a professor (preferably one who is familiar with process and admissions in general, even if for grad school).
FOCUS on your secondaries. That's where you can sell yourself to that specific school.

-Do some research and find out which schools are more OK with canadian students (how many do they accept a year).
I don't know if canadian are considered international or not, so check that out too.

-Apply to a range of schools. Some safe, some reach/out of reach, some out there reach.

I think you are set to go.
Congrats on the mcat score.
