I'm sure most will agree with me when I say you will be very competitive everywhere you apply, though you may want to leave UCLA out since only a few OOS applicants are admitted each year. Still, it may be worth a shot if you really like the school.

You'll definitely stand out to the eyes of the Admissions of Committee..just make sure you write some dazzling essays and don't slack on those secondaries.

You've got a great shot to be accepted. Be sure to purchase the ADEA book on dental schools. It lists acceptance stats for every school so you can see if they accept in-state versus out-of-state.

Air Force has the most competitive HPSP scholarship of any of the branches because they have the least number of scholarships. That being said, I've heard pretty much everywhere that Air Force is the best branch to be a dentist. I think you'd have a great shot on being accepted to it.

Also, since you mentioned that you have done a mission dental trip I have a huge warning for you. If you did anything illegal during your mission trip like actually giving dental care (extracting teeth, filling cavities, etc.) then keep it to yourself. A girl during one of my interviews told her interviewers "I've had a lot of great dental experiences...I went on a mission trip and spent two weeks extracting teeth in a South American country." Her interviewers went quiet, didn't respond for a minute, then told her that was super illegal and frowned upon. Needless to say, she wasn't accepted at that school.

Do you know what the standard etiquette is on going after those (is it bad to apply for multiple or is that expected)

I met with a Navy Recruiter and he told me that he didn't care if you applied to multiple branches, though he would be able to see if you'd applied multiple branches. He did tell me that last year a girl applied for the Navy and Air Force and the Air Force wouldn't even look at her application since she'd applied to the Navy as well. It's a second hand story from a recruiter, but take it for what its worth.

Read any thread about this. There are tons of people who are at or above Harvard's standards in GPA, DAT, research, service, shadowing, etc who get rejected from Harvard without an interview. If everyone in the top 5 percent applies there then that is still more than 500 people! With only 35 spots they are likely only going to interview 100-150 people. It is simple math. It is a waste of time unless you are in the top 1% at which point you might have a fighting chance. If it is really a dream school then go for it, otherwise I've read too many cases of people with 23-24+ on the DAT and 3.9+ GPA with excellent ECs who didn't even hear back from Harvard...

My goodness, you sound EXACTLY like me. Senior with a similar GPA, ECs, and I also plan to get my personal training certification this summer. Only difference is that I'm taking my DATs in a month... which I guess is a very big difference and I would kill to have your scores. I am sure you will have a great shot at wherever you apply. I wouldn't waste your money on UNC. During my interview they told me if I was in-state they would accept me and to file for in-state residency. I'm not saying its impossible but its unlikely and I would apply to somewhere else you have a better change. Good luck!
