Hey all,
I'm a Canadian and just finished my first year of basic sciences at a Caribbean med school (SGU). I didn't do as well as I wanted but I improved in the second semester compared to the first. I got some C's (In Anatomy, Histo, and Neuroscience) (we have a A, B, C, F grading system) and missed a B by a few points in those courses 🙁. I'm working on trying to reduce those dumb mistakes on tests that end up reducing my mark to a whole new letter. The rest of my grades are a mixture of A's and B's.
My GPA as of now is pretty bad at around a 2.6/4.
If I do very well next year and pull up my GPA to at least a 3 by the end of basic sciences, get good grades on clinical rotations, and do good on the USMLE Step 1, do I still stand a chance for a IM residency at a decent program (not top-tier but an okay program that will lead to a good career)?
I don't have any research (other than a few projects in undergrad that didn't lead to a publication).
What else can I do to better my chances of matching in IM?
Thanks a lot for any advice.
