Hi all,

Not sure if this is the place to post this, and mods please feel free to move this if isn't the right forum, but I was wondering about my chances for matching into a decent university program for anesthesiology.

I go to a newer, unranked US allopathic school. Preclinical grades consist of a mix of honors and passes, third year some passes and high passes (can't seem to get honors). Class rank is probably 2nd quartile. Step 1 score is 237. Have an abstract submitted for an unrelated field, but other than that no other research. Involved in some limited ECs. Haven't done anesthesiology rotation yet; earliest I can do it is August. My school doesn't have a particularly strong anesthesiology program but I hope to have a few decent letters.

Will I be able to match into a decent university program with my stats? I would like to do a fellowship afterwards so I would prefer a program with a good reputation. I'm from California, so I would love to match into a West coast program if possible, but I know how difficult it can be to match there. Step 2 in July, and am aiming for a 250+. Easier said than done, but I have been doing well on my shelf exams this year and am blocking off 5 weeks of dedicated study time.

What do you guys think?

Apply to 10+ reasonable programs and you have >99% chance of getting into one. Unless you really don't interview well, have a criminal record, etc.. Make sure anesthesiology is really what you want to do. This field is changing, and not for the better.

Do you think I have a shot at a California program?

If you're willing to pick ANY California program, then yes you should have a shot. I have a few DO friends that interviewed in California with 220s-230s step, was enough to get an interview. Both of them ended up ranking other programs higher and ended there.

my n=1 experience of interviewing up in Seattle sounded like everyone was >245-250 (although my scores weren't, and I didn't do an elective there either).

I cannot stress this enough, but there is a certain randomness to this process that is out of your control.
