Hey everyone,

I graduated in 2013. I took my DAT back in Dec 2013 and this cycle will be my last chance to apply for a lot of schools before my scores expire.

What do you guys think my chances are? How many schools would you apply to with these stats?

I'm thinking of 16 but I'm not sure if that's too little or too much. I am in Illinois and do prefer in-state schools, but with my stats I really can't pick and choose... (Update: will apply to 20 schools)

GPA 3.08 Science and 3.11 Overall
(trend is all over the place but mostly A's in advanced courses last semester)

DAT:
TS: 23 (Bio: 24 GC: 23 OC: 22)
QR: 21
RC: 24
PAT: 24

AA: 23

Shadowing:
320 hours
Work experience as dental assistant: 1900+ hours
Volunteering: 200 hours (homeless shelter, hospital, food pantry)

LORs: 2 strong letters from Science prof
1 strong letter from Physics Prof
1 very strong letter from my dentist/boss
(Update: threw out the weak LOR as suggested and got better ones)

My essay will focus on how became passionate for dentistry from working as a dental assistant and will include memorable experiences at the office. I hope that this will be a strong part of my application.

Thanks for the help. 🙂

Since this is last chance to apply before your scores expire, I would apply to more than 16 schools. Even though your GPA is low, you still got a shot with your DAT scores. Get 4 letters and try to replace the weak one with a stronger one. Your chances are probably around 50:50, so apply broadly and buy the adea book.

I had similiar stats/scores. I was told my experience as a hygienist and upwards trend in academics and how much I imporved my DAT score when I retook it is what put me over the top with the admissions committee.

Thanks for the replies. I thought a lot about it and I think that even though it'll cost a lot, I'll apply to 20 schools this cycle. I think I'll get the ADEA book too when it comes out
in may.

Kudos on the DAT score - you dominated. Good essays and letters of rec go a long way, too, in my opinion. Apply to 20+ schools and you'll get interviews -- good luck!

I think you certainly have a shot if you apply early. You're right, your GPA is quite low, but that DAT score just may be good enough to get you some looks. I don't know if you need to apply to 20 schools, but if I were you, I would certainly apply to no less than 15.

I have very similar stats, slightly higher overall GPA than yours, but no dental assisting experience. With your DAT scores, I think you'll get invited for interviews as long as you apply broadly
