WAMC for SMP Programs with extremely low GPA (2.2)

Hi everyone! Hopefully everyone is doing fine 🙂 So I currently have a 2.2 GPA, taking an extra semester retaking courses. I'm trying to apply for programs for this upcoming Spring 2026 term. I understand SMP programs are highly selective but I am very determined. Which SMP Programs should I apply to? and WAMC?

Welcome to the forums.

You are better served by asking program directors what you should do. Coming in with a sub 3.0 GPA (especially sub 2.5) may be a hard no at some schools because of university admissions policies. I don't have your transcript to make a call, but you may need to show us you can handle a DIY postbac (not masters) first.

i think a lot of programs would want to know that you have truly changed before considering you
i agree that a DIY postbacc may be necessary

Thank you so much! I feel like because I don't have a mentor or anybody to really rely on during this journey, I needed to take initiative myself. Would you say for SMP, a high DAT will offset a low GPA when applying or a DIY post-bac is definitely required?

Hi there, I was in a similar situation to you graduated with ~2.4 uGPA. I did not adjust to covid learning well and had a family job lined up for after graduation, no interest in healthcare at the time. I did 36 units of DIY post-bacc retaking all my below C science courses and raised my cGPA to 2.74. Still below 3.0 but still broadened my options so I applied to the handful of SMP with linkage that did not have a GPA minimum or cut off at 2.4-2.5 and made sure to submit very early. I was accepted to all of them but chose the one with MD linkage. I will say though I think I was accepted due to other factors of my applications: 512 MCAT, ~8000 hrs PCE, 1 pub. From my experience it seems reputable SMPs will only accept students they really believe have the potential to become physicians. I think if you can get a strong MCAT or practice MCAT score and make sure you submit your application very early you will definitely get in.
