Apologies for cross-posting this with IM...really wish there was a central "what are my chances" thread for residencies.

I'm interested in IM, neuro and psych. I'm currently in an MD program in NYC, and am really hoping to stay in NYC for residency. The issue is my Step 1 score -- 219. I've only had one rotation so far and don't have high hopes; extremely weak clinical experience, lots of procrastinating, and what felt like an absurdly difficult shelf does not make me terribly optimistic for the the result. I have yet to do rotations in my fields of interest though.

P/F during first two years (no F's), so-so extracurriculars, and almost certain I'll be taking a year off after third year to do some research.

Any thoughts on my chances in NYC in general? How about placed like NYU, MSSM, etc....any chance at all?

TIA

Psych isn't too competitive. NYU is probably the third-most competitive program in NYC, and might be a bit of a stretch, but not out of range. MSSM might be the same. St. Luke's is a good program and it's not too competitive... probably within range for you. There are also places like Maimonides and NYMC, but you can do better than that.

If your only criterion is that you want to be in NYC, then you'll have plenty of choices. If you want to be at an above-average program in NYC, then your choices are somewhat more limited, but if you went to a US MD school with a not-too-far-below-average Step 1 score, then you have a fair shot at NYU and MSSM, and a pretty good shot at St. Luke's.
