ok I have a 3.53 overall, 3.37 science, don't have DAT scores yet, about 1000 hrs of volunteer experience but no dental experience except some shadowing, I worked a lot while in college and do now, am a minority (black), and I am applying to Meharry, Howard, UAB, and LECOM. And I am an AL resident. Thoughts of chances getting in???

Just perform well on the DAT regardless. Hopefully you plan on taking the DAT relatively soon? Seeing as how it is already October. GPA is fine. It's easier as an applicant if you have good numbers all around. Only four schools is a bit on the light side. I would definitely suggest adding more if at all possible. I would say a good number is 8 to 10.

hard to tell without a DAT score. Repost after you take it.

make sure you do one year of biochem and 6 units of anatomy.

I've got my anatomy n biochem. Test is this thurs. I'm anticipating (according to my practice tests at worst a 15 PAT, probably a 19 AA, and 20 or 21 TS. Oh and don't these scores have some sort of order of importance for most schools?

one more thing...Im applying next year now. And early cause I know how important that is.

if you're applying next year, I would definitely reschedule to when you can get to a higher PAT, 17/18 as a minimum as that seems to be the cutoff for some schools.

well it's weird on how the DAT is scored so Im more than likely underestimating. I think Kaplan's scale for a 20 on PAT was something like 76/90. Idk how bad the other parts on the PAT are for the real test, but I hear and read that the angle ranking section is a straight b**ch. My buddy who just took it told me the science is fairly easy. He finished with like almost 30min's to spare.

I think you should have an excellent shot with a strong DAT but I would add about 4-8 more schools to make for sure because those HBCU's get a heap of applications. UNC Chapel Hill is URM friendly (just throwing that out there).

How long did you study for the DAT and what materials did you use if you don't mind me asking.

Good Luck.

yeah Ikr. Sounds unreal. I don't think I'll finish that fast, but I think I'll murder the science. The PAT and QR might murder me.lol Yeah Imma add several more schools since I am gonna apply next year. Gotta save the money for it tho. They're ridiculously expensive. Didn't know UNC had a dental school. And I used Kaplan and DAT destroyer for prep.

hard to say without DAT score.

Assuming you get 19AA+ (and nothing less than 17 in any individual section), I say you have a decent shot.

try adding Nova, Minnesota (OOS friendly), Oregon (OOS friendly), BU, Tufts, Nyu, Louisville (OOS friendly), Detroit Mercy, Case Western

these can further your chances but I understand if you want to stay near your family.

30 minutes to spare?? um...

It is definitely doable. I am NOT a science genius, but I am very efficient when it comes to preparing for tests. I had completely forgotten GC and had taken few bio classes when I started studying for the DAT. I finished the sciences with about 45 minutes left and then checked over them briefly, changing only one answer. If you know your stuff (Barron's AP, Cliff's AP, Chad), it isn't impossible. For bio, you either know the answers or you don't. No need to dawdle there. Most of the gen chem is conceptual or just asks you to merely set up equations, not actually solve them. The orgo was also highly conceptual and I only had two or three problems that involved multi-step syntheses (and I think these only involved two steps tops).

The sciences are a beast, but don't let them overwhelm you! 😀

20bio, 24genchem, 17orgo, 19AA, 20TS, 17QR, 15RC, and here goes my favorite section I so sarcastically put...13 PAT!!! 🙂 and 🙁

Well I looked all over trying to find out how to start a new thread but couldn't find a damn thing. Anyway, the new topic is " do HBCU dental schools, namely Meharry and Howard weigh PAT scores heavily?". I'm hoping they don't, or that my other DAT scores and GPA's will cover up that ugly thing.
