Hello SDN fam!

I've been lurking around here for a while now and finally decided to ask directly instead of looking around for similar cases 🙂

Texas resident, URM (black female)
Undergrad GPA: 3.9, sGPA: 3.8 non-scGPA:4.0, Graduate GPA (M.S.): 3.8
clinical volunteering; ca. 100 hours
non-clinical: 50 hours
shadowing: 52 hours
teaching assistant: 6 months
research: 300 hours

I'm also a non-trad, 33 years old and have had a non-medical career in the past.

What do y'all think? Do I have a real chance? I know my ECs are very weak, I was wondering if anyone else got in with weaker ECs.

Thanks in advance!!

Based on the AAMC data, you have an excellent chance of getting in somewhere as long as you score 24 or higher on the MCAT.

If you don't want to go to Howard, Morehouse or Meharry you might need to score 27+.

If you want to go to a mid tier school, scoring 30+ will be necessary.

Take everything I say with a grain of salt. I'm just an applicant as well.

Thank you all! I'm studying like a maniac for the MCAT. I'm taking the new one and would like to take it once only...I'm aiming for a 34 equivalent. Not sure about the new scoring.

I'd like to stay in state and apply to all Texas schools. Do y'all think I need more shadowing/volunteering experience?

Hey, similar situation. In order to get into a mid-tier, do you need to have excellent extracurriculars or can you have average, cookie cutter ECs but with a high MCAT/GPA?

My stats are very similar to yours except I am from Florida and I didnt attend graduate school!! I'm planning on applying during the summer. Good luck on studying for the new MCAT!! I just started studying a couple weeks ago.

Me too, @NothingWasTheSame ! I actually wanted to take the April exam but I doubt I'll be ready by then. Are you studying with a certain schedule? I can't find a good one :/ Good luck to you during this upcoming application cycle. I'm already super nervous. Can't think of anything else anymore....:bucktooth:

Right now, your GPA is above the median for most schools, including Stanford and Yale. As a URM, you stand a great chance of an interview at these schools with a solid MCAT.

😱 uggh wow. I didn't even think that far but I don't think I could afford going to one of those schools. I'm a first generation college student... I'd be more than thrilled by an acceptance to one of the Texas schools!!

@Compass123 There are a couple of schedules on SDN for the new MCAT and I have been looking at them.. It's just nerve wracking because nobody knows what to expect. I'm planning on taking the MCAT in May since the scores will get in about the same time that the April scores will.

Thank you, @NothingWasTheSame ! I will be researching a bit more. It is extremely nerve wracking!! But I like the point you made about the test date. It makes perfect sense to me. I think I will do the same thing as it won't really delay the completion of the application significantly.
