I am currently a sophomore and have decided to apply to pharmacy school this coming summer (entrance for Fall 2006). I am still currently taking the pre-reqs, but I will have all of them done before the Fall 2006 school year begins. I am planning to apply to schools that do not require the PCAT, because I am not taking Organic Chemistry until next semester and won't have it completed in time for me to get a decent score on the PCAT. I currently have a 3.5 gpa (thanks to my freshman year and business classes), but I have an A in BIO 1, and I'm currently getting high A's in Chm. II and Calc. I am planning on transferring over my AP Chemistry score to take the place of Chm. I because of the A that I'm currently getting in the course. I currently have no pharmacy experience, although I applied for a job as a Pharmacy Technician and have not heard anything thus far. I am going to try and become certified as a pharm tech, though, if the board will allow me to register to take the exam. My friends and I are also planning on starting a pre-pharm club at our college next semester. We're still trying to get the paperwork done for that, and are trying to recruit more members. What do you think my chances are of getting in? I'm still planning on applying, but I was just curious as to what everyone else thought of my chances of getting accepted. Thanks! :luck:

just be sure your chem AP is accepted as a prereq...I tried to do that with my bio AP and some schools didn't accept it.

Take the PCAT anyway. It really doesn't have that much organic chemistry on it. You will do fine on it if you study the Kaplan PCAT book and just learn your groups.

I agree completely. I had just 8 weeks of Orgo I and had not yet taken Orgo II when I took the PCAT. I still scored mid-90's on the Chemistry section. I would also recommend a little nomenclature along with learning the functional groups.

I second that! If my memory serve me correctly, there were only a few questions on organic chemistry when I took the PCAT. It wasn't that bad. However, some schools actually look at your organic chem. grades as one of the acceptance factors (at least that's what my organic professor told me). Best of luck!! 🙂

the pcat does have quite a bit of o chem on it. I think the % has increased with the new tests.

However, this was great for me because i liked o chem and did not like gen chem that much

Go ahead and take the PCAT, I started taking it before I had organic chem and my scores increased the more times I took it. My philosophy, if you study what you CAN know (for example, what you've already learned) and master that--what you don't know wont make that much of an impact.

Secondly, I like your idea of a pre-pharm club. There is so much new pre-pharm students/applicants can learn from those who have already been through the process. I think this is an EXCELLENT idea!! Good luck with it!

Lastly, you sound like you have a plan, 👍 which is the biggest thing with pharmacy. Plan out every semester and make sure you cover all pre-reqs. Best wishes!
