SUNY Optometry is my ideal school.

I haven't taken the OAT yet, will take it in september. I have a 3.41 GPA, taken 19 credit course loads at a time, graduated early and have shadowed optometrists.

What are my chances? What are the overall chances? Any info that can be given to me will be great! 🙂

This cannot be answered without you taking the OAT. GPA and OAT are the two most important factors.

i know my personal case can not be answered without the oat, but what are the general chances? Say I do decent enough, between a 320-340?

What about acceptance in general to the school? What does it take? What will definitely get you in? Stuff like that. I'm just looking for some general information.

SUNY is a pretty big numbers school so the higher the better. I can't say as to specific numbers how good your odds would be because I have no clue.

I remember someone posting on here that SUNY wants 320+ in each oat section, and 340+ AA. Not sure if those cut-offs are accurate though. I do know that they really like leadership qualities in their students. Just shadowing is not enough for them - they want something special.
They are also one of the earliest schools to start interviewing/admitting people, so get your app. in early. If you do get an interview, know the legislation in your state regarding optometry.

i applied to them last year and got rejected. I ask them for advice for reapplying but they basically told me not to apply again. my GPA was 2.9 then. they said my grades were not good enough, I would say its one of the pickier schools. Out of all the schools I contacted, none of them have told me not to re-apply. They obviously have very specific standards for their students.

I agree. I was rejected outright with 3.69 GPA but a 320 AA/TS. I had over 60 hours of shadowing and 2+ years volunteer experience. Wasn't even offered an interview. I'm a non-traditional student, and took only 12 units a semester for some of my prereqs. When I asked about reapplying I was told that we probably wouldn't be a good fit for each other but they wouldn't go into details. I can only guess that they thought I couldn't handle a full load (even though during undergrad I carried 18 credits/semester while working 45+ hours a week).
I was accepted to PUCO, SCCO, and PCO, and I will be attending my top choice school anyway. I have also been awarded a merit based academic scholarship.
I won't bad mouth any school, but I suppose that if you don't fit into some schools' pre-determined cookie-cutter shape, then you can forget about getting any more than a prefunctory look at your application. Some schools look for and encourage diversity in their prospective students. For others, diversity may not carry as much weight as high stats do.
Just food for thought.

how the hell did you get rejected??? anything you left out? what is SUNY's cookie cutter type?

oh and is it harder for NY state residents to get in? (like, are they trying to get more out of staters to diversify or something?)

Come to think about it, I think that they also said I had too many cc credits (even though I already had a B.S.)

My impression is (and this is only my impression) that they likely have OAT & GPA minimums that they like to see. They may like to see you carry a full 18 credit load at a 4 year institution for the majority of your college career. I had to work my way through school, so that heavy a load wasn't possible for me.

That leaves (IMO) younger applicants who have the financial support & means to carry that load at a 4 year school.

SUNY's site and info on class profiles is limited: http://www.sunyopt.edu/admissions/od_demographics.shtml

Most other schools let you know on their site the mean age and age ranges of their recent classes.

It's just as well, though. I got in to my top choice school. BTW, I was born & bred in NYC (go Yankees! 👍). I don't think that had anything to do with their decision though.

NOTE: For any SUNY students, faculty, or hopefuls, please don't take these statements as attacks, sour grapes, or anything like that. I am merely presenting what happened to me and am just expressing my impressions based on my personal experience with the school. Had I been Accepted to SUNY, I still would have gone elsewhere.

So what do you think the GPA cut-off for SUNY is? I emailed them to ask directly last year and they would not give me a straight answer to this question. If they did have cut-offs it would really be nice to know...

Don't really think there is a cut off to be honest. There were a few students in my class admitted with a 3.2 gpa. I mean, I suppose all schools have a "cut off" but you will find that some students are below that cut off while other students are entering with 4.0's which really all evens out in the end in terms of avg.

I have a question about SUNY's LOR requirements
I missed the deadline for the committee letter at my school because it was before the day of OptomCAS's opening and I didn't look it up until after. I know that is not even a good excuse but that is what happened. Should I even consider applying to SUNY now or just apply somewhere else?
