I'm currently thinking about doing the Navy HPSP scholarship and had a question. My recruiter is telling me that that i have to do a Military match and a Civilian Match. If i don't get the Navy match but do get a civilian match they will let me do my residency in the civilian world and then come back to serve my time to the NAVY. Is that the truth? I'm just afraid that I'll get into the Navy and then be forced into a GMO. If i didn't get a residency in the Navy or civilian match then it would only make sense to do the GMO...but i don't want to match with the civilian and somehow not be allowed to do the residency because the military wants me to do a GMO. Any help would be appreciated. 😳

A GMO tour is after your internship. So...if you didn't match Navy GME but got a civilian deferrment...then you'd have to match civilian. You woudn't be able to do a GMO if you didn't match in either.

You need to read more. You are completely confused and your recruiter is lying to you. Search this message board b/c this topic has been discussed numerous times and most hate the idea of answering a post when you could have educated yourself first.

Short answer is that you must apply for civ and mil match for internship only (unless you are granted a Full deferment.) After internship you will be a GMO if not granted a FD or after a NAVY internship get picked up for Navy residency. FTOS and FD are still possible after your gMO tour but you have to also apply to mil GME as well.

Thank you. I've been researching and the problem is I'm hearing to many conflicting stories. Like this is the first time that I've heard that i'm actually applying for the Navy and Civilian internship and then "praying" that i get a FD to do my residency. (Am I understanding you correctly?)
I'm really trying to understand it more thats why I frequent this group just to get better knowledge of the military. I honestly don't want to do a 1-3 year GMO and then do a residency in what I really wanted to do.
I figured out a long time ago that the recruiter just wants me in the military and might change her number once i sign in blood. If it's any other information that you wouldn't mind sharing I would really appreciate it.

Unless you get a full deferrment this is exactly what is going to happen....especially with the Navy.

Why not take out loans and then during residency apply for FAP. This way you get your loans paid down/off and your in the residency you chose with some extra money during the month?

It's a much better deal. However, don't do it just for the money 🙄 Why do I feel that posting those words will make a difference. 😴

There is a very significant possibility that you will be permitted to do only an internship, either civilian or military, and then be required to serve as a GMO following that single training year, delaying the rest of your residency training. If the detailer is not disclosing this, then you are not being told the truth.

What he said.

Also, those civilian deferrals the recruiters like to talk about seem to be few and far between. Take a look at this year's Navy GME 2+ selection board results:

https://www-nshs.med.navy.mil/gmeapplication/secure/ResultsList.asp

Count up the number of entries marked "FTOS SEL" (selected for fulltime outservice residency) ... Navy-wide, counting every specialty, there are about 20. In addition, the deferrals are hard to "compete" for, since the selection board wants to get the strongest applicants into military residencies. It's possible that being a stellar applicant may actually work against you if you want a deferral.

Bottom line, if you go Navy, you should expect to do a GMO tour.

Well believe me your words are making a difference. I just didn't have a grasp on the entire thing and really wanted to talk to someone that did the program or had an inside on how it worked. This is a new school so we really don't have too many people to ask about it. The only person we have is only a second year. So i really appreciate the help all of you have given me on this topic. And I'll definately look into the FAP program more.

VCOM- understand that the military match takes place before the civilian match, so you don't really 'apply for both'. If you match with the Navy, the civilian match becomes irrelevant.
I tried to get a full deferment (reason being a chronically sick wife) with 95% board scores and two publications, and was denied. If the Navy wants you, they'll take you, and you can't get out of it. It has already been mentioned but can't be said enough: do NOT take the scholarship for the money. The financial freedom you gain does not compare with the personal freedom which you sacrifice.
