I need some advice about what my chances are of matching in IM. I failed step 1 on the first try and took it again and got a 225 the second time. I plan on taking Step 2 by late October/early November. I am not applying for any high tier schools. I know that taking step 2 early helps to compensate a little for a step 1 failure but since I won't be taking it until later, what are my chances considering my step 1 failure and 225 on the second try.I know residency programs are looking for upward trends which is why they want Step 2 scores early but will my step 1 upward trend help to prove that.

When everyone talks about how programs want step 2 scores early does that mean step 2 CS and CK or really emphasizing CK more.

In regards to programs wanting your Step 2 scores early, they are most likely referring to Step 2 CK. Some programs will want to see that you passed Step 2 CS before ranking you. Having early Step 2 CS passing scores may be more important for IMGs, I'm not sure.

You'll be fine. Nice recovery & keep working hard. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

I am sure you are worried that you will get few if any quality interviews because of your Step 1 failure.

The fact is that you will do fine. Many good programs will interview you. Your retake score is quite good, and that's all that most programs will care about. The tip top programs will likely pass you by, but many univeristy programs will be happy to interview you.

Scoring well on Step 2 CK early will help. No one will care about CS.

What did you do different the second time you took Step 1?

I'm about to start studying for it my 2nd time.

nice job on the retake. you should be fine
