Hello, I am a white male in Florida. My GPA: 3.82 sGPA: 3.76 My Mcat score is a 36P.

I know academically I am looking pretty good, however it's everything else I am worried about. I had to work fulltime while going to school and as such my EC's show it.

200+ hours of medical volunteer at a children's hospital.
75 hours of non medical volunteer spread between Homes for Heroes and Food Pantries.
30+ hours of clinical shadowing.

I unfortunately was unable to do clinical research. I organized a few non profit bake sales where all donations went to Komen organization for breast cancer (It was only MAYBE two grand total we raised through out all the events.) and no school clubs.

The only leadership experience I truly have is being a manager at my job.

How will the lack of research and school clubs affect me?

Also what schools should I shoot for?

As for school clubs, I wouldn't worry too much, quality volunteering and clinical experience make up for the resume padders that most clubs really are. VCU is a great school to apply if you already have a good amount of clinical stuff, they are also not as focused on research experience as well, and your stats are great for the school

Do you want to do research? If you have no interest in research I'd say just apply to places you want to live. If you want to do research then the top research schools will likely want research.

I think you can at least send in an app to just about any school that you are interested in except the top research places.

I am not interested in research. I ultimately want to get into medical oncology.

I think you'll be fine without the research, and clubs don't help unless they are a springboard to leadership or community service. I do suggest a minimum of 10 more hours of shadowing, so you'll have the minimum acceptable by UCF. And be sure to include hobbies and artistic interests to make yourself look more well-rounded.

Your job will also be a huge plus on your app. Having financial responsibility and having a leadership position in it shows that you are a mature individual. You can probably get a good letter of rec from your employer too. 😉

Agree with getting as many shadowing hours as you can - not only is this a (soft) requirement for med schools, but it can also be really fun/interesting. Other than that, you're in great shape.

Just as an aside, gotta give major kudos to you for your grades in school and your MCAT score. Really just solid stuff. (I myself grew up somewhat in a privileged bubble and wasn't pushed to work until way late...just very impressed with others such as yourself) 👍

Thanks for the input! Would writing screenplays and shooting a few short films be considered a good hobby/art? The short films were made when I was still a freshman but the screenplays are recent.
