Hi all,

I just graduated with a BA in Biology (gpa 3.4 sgpa ~3.0). I am currently trying to weigh different options for how to improve my chances if I apply to medical school in the next couple of years because I have some pretty terrible grades in some of my important pre-reqs. Here's a preview:

C+ Gen Chem 1, C+ Gen Chem 2
A-Orgo 1, C Orgo 2
A physics 1, A physics 2
C Genetics

a couple of A's and mostly B's in other upper level bio preqs (human physiology, mol bio, ecology, anatomy). I have an upward trend going from 2.7 freshman year to 3.7-3.8 junior and senior year

I am considering retaking the Gen Chem/ Orgo sequence because I feel like I really messed this sequence up and could do better. However, my local university is much easier than where I received my BA (from what I can tell) so I'm not sure how much re-taking at my local university will help me. I also feel unprepared to start studying for the MCAT since I feel like I didn't learn the chemistry I needed to.

Any thoughts on how much retaking Gen Chem/Orgo one class at a time while working full-time would help me?? Thanks for any advice

In the end you'll get out of a chemistry class what you put into it, whether the local school is "easier" than the previous one or not. Make every effort to fully master the material, do all assigned reading, homework and practice problems, attend all lectures and discussions, etc. There are also online resources to supplement your coursework if you look a bit.

When I started taking my pre-reqs (also working full time) I began with just gen. chem I and made sure to do my best. It worked for me, and if you're dedicated and stay focused it will for you, too. By the end of 1 semester, chemistry may go from a weakness to a strength.

As to the MCAT just don't rush and take it before you are prepared. A good piece of advice I got: your goal should just be to get into medical school, not to get into medical school extremely soon.

Good luck
