You should be a shoo-in for Howard and Meharry. I'm sure ECU and a few other schools should interview you. No idea on what UNC would say.

DWI is a cause for concern.

You seem to be pretty competitive for Howard and Meharry, not sure how other schools look at URM. As for the DWI, I've looked through SDN and it appears there's no solid consensus on how much of an impact it will be on your app. It certainly will be of impact but how much I don't think anyone knows. Was it recent?

It was over a year a half ago. Hopefully It does not play a major role, I made a simple mistake, never to be repeated . I plan to apply to at least 15 schools by the way.

Thanks guys

The DWI may not be a barrier for getting accepted into school, but you might want to be totally upfront about it during the application process because you may get accepted, pay a deposit, and then they find it during the background check, and withdraw your acceptance. Or, you may be denied clinical privileges several years down the road, and have already paid and gone through two years of dental school (which would really suck)!

I also forgot to add: Case Western Reserve University has a $25,000 per year scholarship that they offer to URMs that get accepted into their dental program, so that might be a school to add to your list.

You would be a shoo-in for both Howard and Meharry if you didn't go to a community college or have taken any prereqs before you transferred to your current university. Meharry says on their website that "Community college courses are acceptable; however, the prerequisite, upper-level basic science courses (organic chemistry and biochemistry) and the recommended courses— microbiology, anatomy, physiology and cell biology—should be taken at an accredited four-year college or university." Howard is known for not accepting any community college credits, but I can't seem to find it anywhere on their website. You can probably call and ask before you apply to make sure you don't waste your money.

thanks I plan to be upfront about it, I only took g chem 1,2 and bio 1,2 at my Community college. I've taken upper additional bios as well at my University anatomy and physiology, microbio, biochemistry.

So with that do you guys think I'd have a great Chance at Howard or mehharry. Do you guys think I'd have a good chance at case western as well?

I spoke with Howard and my CC shouldn't be an issue, I hope.

I personally think so. Get superb LORs and write a fantastic PS and I do not see why they would not invite you to interview.
