Hi! I'm applying to optometry schools this cycle, my OAT with a 330TS/ 330 AA. What do you all think? Do I have a chance, or should I apply to a graduate program and boost my GPA?

Ouch, that's a killer...
What other stats you have? Volunteer? Extracurriculars? Unexpected events?

Apply! I think you have a chance at some opt schools. Your GPA is on the lower side, but you have a decent OAT score. If there is an upward trend in your GPA the admissions committee will see that. My science GPA was a 2.6ish, but I got into my top optometry school! It doesn't hurt to apply, and if you need to retake some pre-req classes for a better grade then do it. That's what I did. You can also directly contact the schools and they will give you feedback. I contacted my school a year before I applied, got feedback, and spent that time retaking classes and shadowing a lot of places. Apply to schools that take in students with stats similar to you. Are you applying for fall 2018? If yes, then you should apply asap because many of the spots are filling up. Good luck!

Hi! I'm applying to optometry schools this cycle, but I'm really concerned about my gpa: 2.53 science and 2.83 overall. I know those are really low. I took my OAT with a 330TS/ 330 AA. What do you all think? Do I have a chance, or should I apply to a graduate program and boost my GPA?
What did you use to study??

If you don’t mind my asking, what schools did you apply to?

I think you have a fighting chance of getting into the newer schools such as Midwestern Downers grove, UIW etc, MCPHS. I was invited for interviews and accepted to said schools with 3.0 gpa and 300 OAT.

My GPA is very similar to yours just a little higher, and my OAT was a 340 and I got interviews at all my top choice schools. Don't lose hope, just kill it at the interviews and make sure to really show your passion!

Hey skra7,

I'm asking for a sibling. They're pretty interested in optometry but they've been out of school for a while (3 years).

GPA is around 3.2 but there were repeats in some of the science courses (ochem).

They havn't taken the OAT yet but they do pretty well in standardized testing with prep. I'm more worried about their GPA.

Have the incoming stats at UIW increased over the years? I know with a 3.1 its very very hard to get into UHCO.

Maybe they'd have a better chance at UIW instead?

Hi! So I actually did not apply to UHCO, so I don't know much about it. I did apply to UIW and haven't yet heard back from them. However, I've heard of students with that same GPA even lower getting into that program as long as they do well on the OAT. In my opinion, scoring 340+ should get you quite a few interviews, and I'm sure if that's the case your sibling will get an interview invite from UHCO. I've had 4 interviews extended to me so far and I've retaken a handful courses. Hope that helps!

Best of luck skra7

Hey, what school did you end up getting into?? And what did you get on your OAT if you don't mind me asking?

Hey, where have you all applied??

Apply, you’ll get in somewhere. Schools are desperate and someone will take you.

The question you need to ask yourself is if you’re gonna be able to complete your 4 years and pass the boards. Unless you’ve been crushing it lately and your gpa has been drug down by poor freshman and sophomore years then I’d be concerned.
