How am I looking? Applied first batch to ASDOH, Kentucky, Louisville, Detroit Mercy, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Florida, Iowa, Indiana, MUSC, and Roseman

GPA: 3.26 Science: 3.12 (Both low)

DAT: AA: 22 PAT: 18 TS: 19 Bio: 16 🙁

I have about 500 hours of service/volunteering, only 30 hours of shadowing, but that's because I was shadowing a dentist and he offered me a part time job assisting where I now have over 150 hours (115 when I applied), and I ran my own restaurant for 2 years.

Because of your relatively low GPA, you really want to compensate with an above average DAT score (you probably already know this). Try to schedule a retake if you can, and especially boost that Bio score. I suggest you try to put more hours into shadowing, preferably 100.

It's good that you at least applied very early in the cycle. But keep in mind, things are getting quite competitive these days..

So do you think schools value actual assisting less than shadowing?

Yeah, I've been out of school for two years, I think I could get bio up more but O chem is a lost cause trying to rememorize it all just for a test. Thanks

I'm not sure how individual schools would view assisting versus shadowing (perhaps other members from previous cycles can comment on this), but I have read that shadowing/observing is highly regarded by many schools, if only to solidify your career path decision. I would think that assisting doesn't really add much more to your application than shadowing would.

If this is the case, I would seriously reconsider dental school. DS is doing just that, every single week, for at least 2 years. Even if you do get in this cycle, with that mindset I would be surprised if you even pass the first year. As hard as it may be, getting into DS is nothing more than getting your foot in the door, and the beginning of a long path.

I know this doesn't really answer your question, but just something to think about before you invest even more money and time into DS if it's not right for you.

Erm...so you crushed RC/QR? Or maybe my math is off.

We don't know his chemistry scores, but if we assume the 19TS means 19 average for all 3 science scores (it's not how they calculate it, but close enough) then with a 22AA means he should have scored a 26.5 for both the QR AND RC! Impressive, indeed. So your math is right. Unfortunately for you OP, those aren't the subjects you really need to perform very well in, but rather the sciences.

OP, it almost hurts to see such a beautiful RC score get coupled to a Bio score almost half of it.. I don't even know if I should suggest a retake or not in this situation lol

Learning something that interests me is different than an entire year of material again in a month or two. Especially when I have talked to numerous Dentist/Oral surgeons that say they never used it after they entered dental school.

I do appreciate the feedback. Yes, the 30 was a pleasant surprise. In general, I've heard schools emphasize Bio and RC and PAT...

It'll hurt more if I don't get in lol

That's a pretty state heavy list. Where are you from? If you've pulled the trigger already on applying, perhaps you should throw some other schools in the pot.

Suggestions? I am from AZ

Did you certify yourself as an AZ resident with WICHE?

I did not. But would that matter with the schools I applied to? What schools would you suggest?

Most of them. I have only seen uconn, LSU, and nova. It's not too late to add, but I'd do it soon.

I meant of the private schools. Case actually sent out a few, after I did some research. Thank you.

A few of those schools don't interview/accept many out-of-state applicants. WICHE doesn't do anything for those schools besides ASDOH. But if you're an AZ resident, I'd fill out the form and then add a couple of WICHE schools. Western, Oregon, MWU, Colorado are doable. You'll need to snoop around for shadowing requirements. Oregon, for example, wants 50 documented hours. You could call and ask how they feel about your mix of shadow and working. Or you can try to crank out some hours and update your application with each of your schools.

Pimp yourself hard with ASDOH.

I have some contacts with people at ASDOH plus I have an advising appointment on Friday so hopefully that works well. So I am thinking Case and Midwestern AZ

30 RC is insane. I wouldn't retake lol.
