EC's: President of the Radiology interest group at my school. Many volunteer hours here and there

What do you guys think? Should I still try for DR or give up the dream? Thank you

Your chances are low(10-15%), but that doesn't mean its nonexistent.

You can apply for radiology still and backup apply to other specialties too such as IM just to be safe. Even 1 interview in Radiology might allow you to get a spot especially if they see you being president of radiology interest group.

Also, a score of 245/250+ on step 2 will for sure make up your step 1.

Where you getting 10-15% from? Last year 31/34 DO students in his score range matched

91% chance of matching. According to the most recent residency match data. Some on SDN never let the facts get in the way of there opinion. I would say if you apply to every program in the country you will get in for sure!

You will probably match as long as you know where to apply. I am not sure but it also seems that the trend is increasing as far as the number students applying to radiology (?). For instance, in my school we have always had about 6 to 12 students apply per year. I am hearing this year they are like 25 or so. That said IR is probably a big component of that. I do not have the detail though.

Regardless, good luck.

Yep. Seeing same trend but I feel that a lot of IR peeps use DR as a backup so the increased in competiveness.

In regards to OPs application how much is DO status actually hurting them? Is rads that unfriendly to DOs or is the issue more the step1 score?
Being a DO is a huge disadvantage in Radiology, even if you have the board scores. BUT you can still get into a good/decent program.

Again show me the numbers, the data disagrees with you.

We're probably not talking about the same thing. I don't mean chances of matching into a program (though data does show some disadvantage). The real disadvantage lies in the quality of interviews for DO applicants with similar or better applications/scores than their USMD counterparts.

Fair enough
