Ok, here's the deal, I'll have a Cum GPA of 3.11, Non-Sci. GPA of 3.24, Sci GPA of 3.09, and BCP GPA of 3.15. My Dat is AA/Sci/PAT is 18/19/17. I have very good recs. great work experience, good amount of hours shadowing, etc. I'm just wondering if these scores will get me in some where? Also, is the science portion of the dat looked at more closely than other sections? Last, will it help that I went to a very good undergrad school?

hmm i'd retake the dat if i were you but it you decide not to apply the first day that the application comes out and apply to many private schools.

I'd take the DAT again. You could get in to some school with those numbers, but you could just as easily get denied by all. Thats not a risk I would take.

In any case, apply early, like in May.

*edit*

The science portion of the DAT is more important than the other sections. Not saying you can mess up the other sections and be fine. But it is better to do good on the sciences and adequate on the rest than good on the rest and adequate on the sciences.

Your DAT scores should be enough for people to judge for themselves how good your undergrad is.

If we were to assume that your GPA sucks because you go to a "very good" school and the competion is supposedly more fierce than the average 2nd or 3rd tiers, you should've been able to pull off DAT scores better than what you have.

I do not go to a "very good" school by any standard but I got way better DAT scores than you did overall. And the fact of the matter is all I had to do for the DAT preparation was to just "look over" the material.

My pre-req's classes had prepared me so well that I didn't have to do much this time around.

Grades and DAT scores alone make the first cut.

Pikeyman

First, you did not do MUCH better than I did because your AA and TS are ONLY 1 point higher than mine. Second, I wouldn't brag about how you only studied over spring break to get your scores, and not consider what I did to get my scores. Finally, you may have gotten into a dental school or several dental schools, but your cocky attitude is quite an embarrassment to the entire pre-dental/dental community.

I don't know why everyone is saying to retake the dat. Your scores aren't too bad, and if you are worried, call some admissions offices and ask them about it, im sure they will be very helpful. It seems like your scores can get you into a few private schools, and who knows, something in your app. may stick out and earn you an invite. A big thing about scores is that they are what many schools use for the cut off for invitations. This year was competitive and I can only imagine next year being more so. You could get accepted, but maybe not to yuor top choice. Good luck and really consider calling some schools about where you would stand in the next cycle, cause I know i would hate to take the DAT a second time.

Who was the one that posted "I go to a very good undergrad school"?

Yeah, I'm the cocky SOB.

BTW, yeah, it's just one point but the bottom line is your scores are not as HIGH as mine.

You must have some f'cking problem that you had to have more than two screen names. Got burned way too many times?

You have no chance. My gpa is way better than yours and my DAT is way better too! I am way better than u! OK IM KIDDING...HAHA. SOrry 🙂. I think you will have a good chance if you apply as early as possible, especially to your state school you should be money! FOR SAFE MEASURE, I would try to score 20's across the board on your DAT tho...that would pretty much guarantee you in! Regardless...good luck man, I wish you the best, I was in your exact position once...yikes...i hated it 😛.

Where did you ever get the idea that I had two screen names? If it's because you want to know how I found out that you did WAY better than me, then you should probably look at some of your previous posts! There is nothing wrong with saying that I go to a good undergrad school, just like there is nothing wrong with you saying that "I do not go to a 'very good' school by any standard," right? I don't make the rankings, the reputation, etc, so I don't think it's a cocky statement by any means. It was intended for people to reply by saying "yes, I feel that the undergrad you go to does play a role in the decision, or no it doesn't matter if you go to Cornell or Cal State Fullerton." I think you need to chill out and stop jumping all over people with your exceptionally high DAT scores, because for all you know, I never studied once and took the DAT whereas it took you a week of "looking over your notes" to get the scores you got.

Wow, you guys did fairly well on the DAT for not really studying that hard. Maybe I will try that strategy......................

You are definitely cocky, and you may even think you are better. Consider this however- people typically dislike dentists and with your dumb_ss attitude, your office could be a very lonely and empty place. What good will your arrogance be then? Questions, questions...

Very good undergrad?? hmm...

Okay here is the deal.

My GPA 3.55, Science 3.49.

DAT PAT 22 , AA 21

Guess what?

I applied 9 schools and 6 schools rejected me (didn't even call me for interview)

And 1 school rejection after inteview, and 2 school waited list.

Sigh,

Good luck

Dude how were you rejected with those stats they look real good. Did you apply late or something. Bad interviews all around?

Hi, USCdent82

I was just curious who you were. I also go to USC and will be applying this spring. Are you in DeltaDeltaSigma?

I would say, if you apply super early, and you do awesome in your interview, you have a 50/50 shot at getting in. Dont dont get your hopes up. Good luck

Maybe a stupid question but how did you find out what all your GPA's are like that

Like what classes should be considered in each of those calculations???

My Transcript only tells me overall GPA and I know my GPA without all my core classes is considerably higher....

is science GPA calculated with bio/chem? physics? Math?

Just wondering 🙂

THANKS

AADSAS will calculate for you.

Heh Heh.

damn dentistry :meanie:

i think it does make a difference, given that you have already passed their initial GPA and DAT cutoffs. it's just like applying to colleges--the initial step is looking at your raw scores/GPA, and the secondary step is to look at your extracurrs and school.

i don't care what people say on this board. a 3.2 GPA from a top 20 university holds a lot more weight than a 3.2 from some obscure smalltown college. you can't say that the level of competition between students is the same in the two categories--for the top level univerisities, you're competing against gunners, people who were in the top 10% of their high school class. for the obscure smalltown colleges, you're competing against a different crowd. for the same amount of effort, you can score at a higher percentile when compared against your classmates.

my DATs were good but my GPA was average/wee bit lower than average for some of the schools i applied to. but i ended up happy with the outcome, because i'm almost positive that the schools did pay attention to my school and my major.

There's always NYU!! I'm only messing with ya!!! Your scores are actually pretty good as there are not many schools with an average DAT of 20/20 and a 3.5 gpa. As a current dental student I knew almost too many peeps that got into dental school with almost your identical stats, actually I don't know of a single friend/classmate,acquaintance who didn't get into dental school. My info may be anectdotal but during undergrad I was very involved with the pre-dental associations and activities on campus and met many with similar stats as you.

So, DON'T RETAKE YOUR DAT!!! Unless you are intent on going to harvard, then u might wanna increase your gpa a tad bit..

Don't worry and just work on making your application as well-rounded (with research, volunteer, tutor, pre dental, knitting (j/k)) as possible. Be confident at the interviews and know that you are a competitive applicant.

Above all.... Have fun and in no time u too can cut teeth for $$$.
