I was wondering what some of the attendings and more experienced people may think about my situation...

I used to be a categorical surgery resident in a low-tier university program. I lost my residency after my PGY-2 year because I failed Step 3 in a state that requires Step 3 in order to advance to the PGY-3 level. (I finally did pass that hurdle.) My ABSITEs were low, which most definitely didn't help, but so were everyone else's in my class. Truth be told, I realize how lucky I was now in even having landed my categorical spot as my USMLEs were not good, but I had significant research and graduated from a good medical school. I have landed a good surgical research position under someone with a "big" name and am hoping to improve on my ABSITEs. My letters of rec have only good things to say about my clinical performance and ability to work with others.

I've been frightened by the APDS website listing all the "available residents," mostly because I suppose their numbers are probably far better than mine. I am wondering what people think my chances really are at landing back in a surgery program with my track record? Is the fact that I am a graduate of a US medical school of any significance? Does anyone know of anyone having done surgical research and then not finding a residency position? Please, I'd appreciate all the help I can get... I've been going after surgery for what seems a long time and I just want to believe that I'm not living a pipe dream.

WHOAA! Looks like its time for the "DYNX matching calculator" again (still patent pending, phucking patent office). And your matching chances come too.....

For future people with this type of question again please include information like if you have a fuzzy toilet seat cover and what you had for breakfast last tuesday...it counts.
