Hey everyone. I'm applying to the following carribean schools: st. matthews, SGU, Ross, AUC and one or two others ?( maybe). Here are my stats ( i know they're not great...🙁) but what are my chances from those that have been accepted or even those that have been rejected?

GPA: right under 3.0
MCAT: 23
lots of volunteer/leadership during college
shadowed an oncologist for a few weeks
great letters of rec


also does being female/indian give me any kind of advantage anywhere? is one school more open to diversity than another?

Take some undergraduate classes to get your GPA up to 3.0. Probably only need a few if you are close to it already. Then apply to Osteopathic Medical schools. To get in, however, you need more volunteer, extracurricular, and "stand-out" experiences to show a keen interest in medicine. May want to take the MCAT again, but I've seen worse.

Stats are fine, Indian, if like India no then you will be with the majority at some schools, if American Indian then yes it may be interesting? But in reality no your stats are good enough and you should get in.

Always try and get into a American school first (DO or MD), but if that doesnt work out for you, you can decide to go to the carrib.

Re. your scores... i dont believe you cant be accepted into a American Medical School. However from what i read on other various threads you can go about getting a Post-Bac. and try to apply again.

If you choose the path of going to a carrib. school, I say you have a good chance of getting into SMU. Im not sure of the SGU, AUC and others. However there is a lot of threads regarding what are my chances on the valuemd site.

Being an Indian (desi), prolly wont be able to help you much. However in the carrib. there are a lot of desi folk, so you wont be alone (ethnically speaking).

However the best thing you can so if apply to as many as your heart desires.

Yes absolutely, apply and see. Highly recommend you look at SGU, Ross, AUC or SABA first. If not these, then look at MUA, AUA, or Sint Eustatius. If not these, then do not go. I'm a 4th semester at SMU for now, and I am trying to get out of here as soon as possible. This was a decision I regretted from day 1; I wish I would have looked into AUA harder. Ross and AUC both rejected me, Ross twice. I highly recommend you look at these schools only; the other carib med schools are a real crap shoot. I was a student at Indiana Univ in Bloomington, Univ of Illinois, among others, and I never thought I would ever look at a carib med school; unfortunately, I wound up going this route. I have regretted every minute of it. I should have stuck it out in the US schools, done well and gone to a US med school. I went to St. James (3 wks); it was horrible. I went to Xavier (3 wks); it was horrible. They were soooo horrible I just left. I'd rather not go to med school. I'd go back and finish in the US before I would ever "graduate" from one of those "med schools." I feel the same way about SMU. You are really really taking your chances at a lot of these carib med schools. Sorry, for the negativity, but you need to have an idea of what you are getting into. Choose wisely. I really regret my decisions thus far, but I am applying to AUA and Sint Eustatius now. I feel much more comfortable with these two schools; I'm sure I will not regret going there. Best wishes!

SB, I graduated from a bigten school and also have a MS from one too. You picked some of the worst schools to go to. Why didn't you try Ross, SGU or Saba? St. James for God's sake?? What were you thinking? AUA is your best choice now but you wasted a couple semesters floating around the Carribean. Anyway just curious why you picked SJU, X and SMU in that order?

You can become a MD from SJU, X and SMU but its very difficult. Just wanted to add that.

Actually, I did not want to have to finish the pre-reqs; a big mistake in retrospect. I then thought SMU was my best option in light of the fact that I got rejected by Ross and AUC. I certainly would have gone there before SMU. After my experience with SMU, I knew I had to leave, so AUA and SE seem to be heading in the right direction. MUA and SABA may look at me after step 1, but I do not like that. I want a school to believe in me and help me from the start, not after I get a certain step 1 score. So, I will not look at either one of them later; you are with me or not. I do not need them.

American Indian- full ride to Harvard.
Caucasian American- $250 undergrad scholarship in Boston. Then see how much loan money you can get.

Unfair. Your numbers are close to the median. Make yourself standout. You may need to call and plead for an interview and then it would be up to you to prove your worth it.

My first attempt at med school in the US was unsuccessful. I had a 24 MCAT and 3.57 GPA. I was rejected from all US schools and did NOT apply to DO schools. As I mentioned, I was accepted at Ross and SGU. I decided not to go because I didn't want to leave my wife and she couldn't work in the islands. Also, the cost of attending was not worth the potential risk of an off-shores school (no matter how small that risk might have actually been).

My second year, my stats had not improved much, but I applied to one DO school (GA-PCOM) and was accepted. Again I decided not to attend due to the amount of money in exchange for a non-MD degree.

Now here's the thing...the two routes I considered (Caribbean and DO) are 100% viable and legitimate routes that would've turned me into a great doctor. I've known many AWESOME doctors who were DOs or FMGs. I'm not knocking the routes. But in the end, you have to do what's in your heart. I retook the MCAT, made a 27 and got into Mercer School of Medicine. I don't think I'll become any better doctor there, but that was always my heart's desire so I waited. I know it's tough to watch your friends all go off to med school while you look for work, but is it worth it in the end to wait? Only you can answer. Good luck!

Hey fellow Georgian, my friend and I are both from Ga and will practice in Southern GA. We did Caribbean because it was right for us, but I think you did the right thing for you and thats the thing, too many are ready to judge and spread myths and lies to put others down and in their "Place" the fact is that all these premeds do not make it this far nor make it through Medschool. I'm about 1/2 through now, will take step one this summer.

Congratulations! I love hearing success stories like that. Sometimes I kick myself thinking how I could be getting ready to take step 1 this summer.

I remember interviewing for Ross back in Feb. 2005. One of the guys giving our tour was just starting his rotations. He had scored like 250+ What I really found interesting was he was from Ga. as well. Had been rejected from GA schools like two years in a row. I bet they'd be sorry if they only knew!

I shadowed a guy in Macon last year...he was a 3rd years Family Practice resident at Mercer. This guy went to Ross and he had to be one of the best doctors I've ever known. Everyone loved this guy. When he graduated he won so many awards it was amazing. He's got a very successful practice in Adel, Ga right now. He told me, the trick with Ross is they often make it MORE difficult to succeed in your first two years. That way, only the students who are going to do well on Step 1 anyway even end up taking it. I'm not sure if that practice is true for other Caribb. schools, but I'd be interested to know.
