Chances??

-Hmmm that is a tough bind. I think your sGPA and cumGPA are too low for some schools. If I were you I would apply broadly. I would take a semester of Fall post-bac to get your GPA up and knock out the MCAT in Jan, and then apply to all 9 schools. I would not apply until after your increased your GPA. GL

Hello,

Please advise me chances for podiatry school. I am very confused if I should apply to school now or wait until jan when i take the mcat. my gpa is below average and hoping to get above average mcat. I am studying full time for it now.
I graduated from university with biology degree this year and thinking of taking fall quarter as a post bacc. i dono if that will help me to push my gpa that much but atleast it will show uptrend when I get A.
my cgpa is 2.7 and sgpa is 2.6.

Your response will be appreciated.
Thanks

I would take a few post bac courses to prove to yourself (and the schools) that you can make it.

I can tell you that as a first year student, podiatry school is not easy. I seem to be doing moderately well but its a ton of work. The tests are about as hard as undergrad but the thing that makes it difficult is the amount of material asked of you and the fact that there is no curve anymore. Do you think you could take 6 science courses all at one time and pass? Do you want to risk 70K with a chance you may not make it?

There are several in my class that are sinking right now.

well , you need to raise that GPA , podiatry school is not that easy, it will be similar to med school and most of the professors are MD and the way they teach and test will be the same way they teach in med school. the average GPA to apply to a pod school is around 3.3 it means you can have a lower GPA but not like a 2.7😉 , study hard for the MCAT , im sure you have done some extra activities , shadow a podiatrist and write a good pesonal statement , you will get somewhere if you do so , applying early wont make a difference for you, they will accept application till june. based on AACPM each year almost 900 applicants apply to pod schools.

I doubt many schools will even look at you with a gpa so low. You need to destroy the MCAT, and then take some graduate courses and destroy those as well. Taking one difficult course at a time and doing well will not help you. You need to take at least 3-4 at a time and KILL them, because as mentioned above, that is what podiatry school is like.

As a side note, if possible, take some advanced classes in the following areas: physiology, microbiology or biochemistry because these are classes that you will have to take in podiatry school anyway, so hopefully it will make it easier for you if you do indeed get accepted.

physiology, microbiology or biochemistry

I agree with the above courses.

Also, obviously take anatomy in undergrad and learn it, apply it, know it. Dont just memorize and dump. I wish I had some anatomy skills coming into this semester. Its been a lot of info/work. We are taking 11 semester hours of anatomy/embryology right now. Not having a background in Anatomy from undergrad is defiantly not an advantage to me.

Totally agree with the anatomy advice. That was my only regret from undergrad: not taking a solid gross anatomy course which would have really helped me in podiatry school.

I recommend that ALL PRE-PODS take a gross anatomy course and you learn it and study as hard as you can. It should make it just a bit more bearable when you have to learn it the 2nd time instead of seeing it all for the first.

some schools may have a cut off if you score below a 6 in any section but not sure
