You should shoot for as high an MCAT as you possibly can. Don't look at the URM stats and set your expectations to it, aim higher, always.

With that said, many of these top 10 universities have, at most, about 20 URM students in their classes. So just know that just because you're URM doesn't mean you have it easy. You'll also be applying against other URMs that have better stats and/or life stories than you do. So just make sure you have as high as mcat as possible, your LORs are on point, and your personal statement makes you seem like the second coming of christ.

I don't think anyone can really give you a stats, chance-wise, without your mcat (which is one of the 2 major factors that come into play)

Either way, I'm in the same boat as you and shooting for Harvard, UCLA, and Mount Sania, in that order.

Hopefully we can both come back to this thread and update our success 🙂

Good luck!

At a top 3, your URM status is meaningless. You need Asian stats to get in because there will be enough URM with those stats applying. In your case, try a 36+ to make up for the 3.5 that's way below the 10th percentile.

Wait, why does attending a top school for undergrad make the URM status meaningless?

I attend Cornell, and that doesn't make me any less Hispanic than my friends at Florida State or UF (went to HS in FL).

He means that there are enough URM with perfect stats applying to fill the spots at the top schools. So with your stats, your URM advantage only really helps at schools where your stats are more comparable.

Do you know the stats of urms who have gotten into the top 3? I am looking to reach there too!

It will help, I'm hoping cuz I'm also URM, but it's more of an aid than a crutch, you can't expect it to pull you in no matter what. With the level of competition you need to have everything else on par, since those on par who aren't URM might not even get it.

I dont think URM status is meaningless... if you look at the AAMC data, only about 9 black kids each year have a 3.8+ gpa and an MCAT of 36+. Harvard accepts more than just 9 black kids not to mention all the other top schools. Further analysis shows that roughly 75 black kids each year apply and are accepted with a 3.4+ gpa and a 33+ MCAT. This is compared to over 5000 accepted students with a 3.6+ gpa and 33+ MCAT. Needless to say, being URM makes you quite unique. Also, according to the MSAR, there are about 150 blacks in the top 15 school. Clearly then, many have stats below 3.4+ and 33...

Maybe top 3 is reaching a bit high but I wouldnt let anything stop you if you have the life experiences and ECs to back it up.

URM can get in with lower stats because they are usually more culturally competent and they can more effectively communicate/treat minorities of their kind.

"Their kind"? We are all equal, whether Asian, African decent or what have you. Be careful with your terminology. I'm sure you aren't racist. It just sounds ignorant.

Don't take it the wrong way, I appreciate you being understanding of the medical schools' mission of cultural diversity

I totally agree.

Besides those stats are encouraging. I hope they remain the same plus or minus +.10 in the next two app cycles

I think once you get into the top tier (top 3 schools)...please...you better have your numbers right. I don't even see you being considered if your GPA is at 3.5 and an mcat score of below a 38...seriously guys. Remember like someone said already...at that level you have asians and many other cultures that fit that URM demographic. Those kids (black or hispanic) who get it sure have their figures high. A buddy of ours in high school (hispanic kid) made it to harvard coz he got an ACT of 30 and another girl, friend of mines actually (hispanic as well) got accepted to Harvard coz she had a 33 on her ACT. Below those figures...my blackness doesn't help me that much...

This post might have been interpreted wrong, the OP attends a top 3 university and wants to go to a top medical school.

Im confused about something though after reading you guys post, it seems to be a very fine line between being a top 20 med school candidate and being a DO only candidate as a URM. I found it safe to assume that if I had stats like the OP I would be lucky to get into an MD school granted the unknown mcat is a big factor.

Just do your best and apply broadly. I tend to think the application process is 60 % hard work (stats, essays, interviews) and 40 % luck (read the stars aligning/ God factor etc)
