Hello everyone,

Crunch time here. So I have a 3.5 from Syracuse university, got my mcat scores back on 24th July (yesterday) and I was absolutely stunned by what I got. I was easily, consistently averaging 30-32 on the practice Mcats by AMCAS, but I did extremely horrible. Got a 20S. I am definitely taking my Mcats again, hopefully soon (within 3 weeks). I'm assuming there was a huge blunder when I took my exam. But in case, my score doesn't improve by much, what do u guys think of my chances at Saint George or Ross.

Just like everyone else, I have tons of ECs, but I doubt that would be I any help, especially when they sart reviewing the apps. On top of that, I have pretty solid recs.

Any of you guys know of my chances based on my current stats!? That's considering my 20S.

Thanks a lot in advance

Take a year study hard get at least a 25 and go for DO

MD is out of the question, but not for good. If I was in your shoes I would certainly retake the MCAT as its possible you bombed it because of jitters? - assuming your practice testing environment was accurate.

At the very least retake it, say end of January or April of next year and get into a US MD school the Fall 2014. Don't throw your money away down south.

What about the people who have submitted (early July) and haven't been verified yet? I got my score back yesterday, 26, and I was wondering what should I do? Sign up and take it end of August/early Septemeber or just withdraw and wait until next application cycle? 😕

i have my applications all set and ready to go, but i STILL HAVENT TURNED ANY OF THE APPS IN ANYWAYS! and there was definitely something wrong when i took my exam. i just took a practice test again (without studying for a month) and got a 30! i really can't figure out what could have possibly gone wrong during the real exam, cuz i know that i know my stuff!!

and MD is the only thing i want to do and i know i m more than capable. so maybe rewrite it ASAP? and apply to both US and carr. schools and hopefully get in atleast somewhere??

i m really still baffled by my scores, totally unexpected!

Depends... can you study for the mcat really hard for the next 3 weeks in time to take it in august. If you take it mid august but have your aamc submitted and waiting for verification, and if you apply to schools that automatically send secondaries in time for you to be complete no later than mid september then you may have a shot. SDN tends to overdramatize the effect of an august mcat, an august mcat puts you at a disadvantage but it doesn't put you out of the game. If you have incredible extracurriculars, great LOR's and a compelling personal statement, you can still have a shot as long as your willing to apply DO or mid-low tier MD schools.

If you don't want to deal with the stress and pressure of having to crunch the mcat into 3-4 weeks and are okay with taking a year off then I would suggest doing that. you would have more than enough time to identify what went wrong on the mcat and you would most likely be at more peace about it.

Good luck 🙂

Do you mean you have already taken a year off this cycle or that because of your mcat you are planning to take a year off?

i just graduated, so i am already applying for the 2013 cycle. if i decide to take another year off, i would be applying for 2014 cycle

i can't take another year off cuz i am already applying for 2013. 2014 will be ridiculous and the bad thing is that i had nothing to do, so i decided to pick up some classes at a community college nearby and started taking calc 3, just for the heck of it, and i m doing pretty solid in that, but the classes don't end till august 10th!!

Ok I get what your saying, alright say you took the mcat at the end of august to give you more time, which really is pushing it btw but if you are set on applying this cycle you could do that...apply to A LOT of schools. Some people may disagree with me but 25+ I think is needed to have a shot in your situation.

Assuming you do well on that mcat, you can get your score back by the end of september and turn around your secondaries like immediately. I mean as soon as you get thing.. and maybe.. you will get a few interviews. You have to understand that doing this is very risky and the application process is expensive. There is a possibility that you would spend all that time and effort doing this and still not get accepted anywhere, but if you are set on applying this cycle that's what you could do. But it's really risky :/

You also have to realize that 3 weeks of studying is not ideal in your situation because a 20 shows you need a lot of improvement but you know yourself better than anyone and if you think you can pull it off you might be able to.

And I say you might be able to pull it off only because you were scoring 30-32 on the practice tests

which AAMC practice tests were you taking before? which one did you take just now?

:eyebrow:

i, like others here, also think you could use a year off, but not for mcat related reasons 😛

true, agreed. I think I can pull it off, well a 25 easily, because something substantially went wrong to get this 20 ( i still dont know what, but def something). And if i dont get into any US schools, I am gonna try to Ross and SGU too!! u guys think i have a better chance there? even with this score??

Study harder! Actually understand what you're studying not just memorize everything. Take a practice test every other day, and review them thoroughly the day after. Then go through material that you feel you are lacking.

I rinsed and repeated that and basically dated my MCAT book for a month (never took a MCAT class for all those privileged kids out there) plus everyday verbal sections. My 9 AAMC Practice tests were 38-40 and I ended up getting a 34.

ONE WORD OF ADVICE: Take your average AAMC practice test score average, subtract 4-6 and thats what you can nearly expect on the MCAT.

I was averaging a 33-34 on practice tests and got a 33. Subtracting 4-6 points is rather extreme and probably doesn't hold true on average.
