I had heard that starting in 2008 Anesthesia programs will no longer be 1+3 but instead will be direct 4-year programs that you apply to with the 1st year basically being a built-in transition year.

Does anyone know if this is true or not? Thanks!

They are encouraging programs to go to 4 years (include their own internship), but it is still optional.

Yes, it's true. I'm not positive about 2008 though. They are also trying to get residents up to 4-6 mos of ICU, one of preop clinic.

As I understand it, and I have no reference to this, by 2008 each program must offer at least 1 spot as "categorical". To the many 3 year programs, this will likely simply mean an affiliation with a nearby transitional year type program to offer the required one spot.

They tried to make it mandatory...didn't pass. The revision that finally passed (to take effect in 2008) has no such requirement. It does increase the CC months to 4 (2 can be during internship), increases the number of pain months and a few other minor things.

So programs can still have all advanced positions, all categorical, or a mix.

still not required but you will see more and more programs becoming a 4 year program over the next couple of years. i enjoyed my surgical internship and it would be a shame if they completely change the 1+3 structure.
