Anyone know if you can unassign a personal statement, edit the thing with a modified focus, and resubmit? If the program has already downloaded would this be a waste of time or rather too late to change ? I was advised by a guru in the field to change the focus- I already submitted the damn thing and assigned to programs??

You can always unassign the PS but that doesn't guarantee the program hasn't seen the original. BUT if they haven't downloaded it, then the revised PS would replace the original.

As you said, in your case it's a waste of time unfortunately.
