Yes, a physician can do another residency if he/she chooses. However, it's hard to find a spot that will take you since the residency program gets no GME funding for the spot and there are other competitive applicants trying to get that spot.
Sure but I'd rather be waterboarded than go through residency again.

Incorrect. This has been covered multiple times, mostly by aPD. Once you've "timed out" on your residency training, you will be funded at 100% of "IME" or indirect costs (that part of the funding that goes to cover the lost efficiency inherent in training residents) and 50% of "DME" or direct costs (salary and benefits). Overall, probably something in the 60-70% of total costs will be covered. All fellows are funded this way so it's not really that big of a deal.
And completing a residency will, in and of itself, make one somewhat competitive for another (assuming we're not talking about a Carib grad who finishes a community FM residency and applies to integrated PRS or Derm).

I know of a Carib grad that did the full 3 of IM, then did ortho at a name place (different from IM place).
apollyon, that's very atypical, I'm sure you know.
Agree w/the other comments above. It's incorrect the residency would get NO funding for you doing a 2nd residency, but they will get less (see above). There are a fair number of people "double boarded", for example IM plus psych or nuclear med plus radiology, etc. Or some people do IM and then switch to something else entirely, like neuro or anesthesiology.

This used to be more common in the past, but recently this has become very uncommon. Why? Primarily because funding from Medicare runs out if you "use it up."
