Anyone have experience with changing a DEROS date? Husband attended AMP course starting around Aug. 1 before checking into his unit (we are overseas and were told to first report ot AMP and then proceed to station). We assumed his obligation would end 3 years after the above date. What we are being told now though is his obligation doesn't end until 3 years after checking into his unit which was mid Sept. We are overseas and he would like to begin civilian residency summer of 2012, DEROS date not until mid-Sept. We were planning on using 45 days terminal leave to separate now it doesn't seem possible. Any thoughts? We hate the idea of delaying residency for yet another year, but aren't sure of any other options. Thanks

DEROS and End Date for HPSP are two different terms. End date should be stated in the official order. I (Army) saw my end date (HPSP) when I got an order to start residency. DEROS are typically earlier date and it is time you will stay before PCSing from overseas. If your DEROS is less than 1 year from your End date and if you are not going to extend you will likely stay until your HPSP end date and only then your HPSP end date will become your DEROS.

DEROS can be changed to later date with AIP, FSTE etc..., but I am not sure about changing it earlier date (compassion assignment etc..). I don't think you can change it (in this case HPSP end date) to start residency on time

Please do not assume anything in the military. Good luck.

I'm prospectively looking at a similar situation. I'm being sent TDY en route in conjunction with my upcoming PCS. From everything I've been told, the clock doesn't start on my obligation until I sign in following the TDY (2 months). The best you can do is see if your husband's command will allow him to take regular leave in conjunction with the separation leave to get him to his residency on time. Otherwise, you're looking at asking the residency program to let him start off-cycle.

During last 8 years I have two sets of order. First order states my specific report date to residency and specific HPSP end date 7 years from my report date. I graduated the residency on time. The second set of order (PCS order) does not mention HPSP end date except for report date. I reported to my PCS duty station on time after taking one month leave. Does this mean my end date moved back by one month?

Not sure if your question is meant to be rhetorical or not, but the situations are not analogous. Your report date to your new duty station allowed for the month of leave as part of the normal PCSing process. This is chargeable leave, as you're well aware, so in theory that is simply one month less that you will be away from work while at your duty station. As far as reporting to a new permanent duty station, the Army doesn't consider going TDY to a school to be equivalent to taking ordinary leave. I don't know if this is applicable to all TDY, or - as in my case and the OP's husband's case - for TDY as a student at a school. I plan to discuss this with my HRD staff, but I've spoken with several people who confirm this policy, some of them personally.

His commander is trying to help his DEROS get changed, we are saving all of our leave to use as terminal leave! Hopefully we can get the date moved up about 30 days to help us out....otherwise it looks like we will be asking a residency program for a late start just like you mentioned. Thanks everyone for your words....unfortunately for us doesn't look like changing a DEROS has much success especially when you want to separate after! Add this to the things we'd wish we'd known! LOL

I had the same situation. You can extend a DEROS but you can almost never get it shortened.

They screw you on this. When I signed (In March of 2009) they said my contract for Europe would start when I left Hawaii (June 26th of 2009) but in April they ordered me to attend a school from July to September of 2009 in route! Thus my deros was rolled to SEPT 14 of 2012 (instead of June). My ETS is actually June of 2012 but your DEROS over rides your ETS so they essentially screwed me out of 4 months of service.

Sounds like your situation is a little better as he has time left but just so you know it is very difficult to shorten a DEROS.

Here is a glass half full concept: I wonder if you are eligible for ISP?
