I'm curious if anyone was in another specialty but then switched into PM&R.

So, I've decided to jump ship from IM into something else. It comes down to PM&R Vs Neurology.

The more I think about PM&R, the more I like it. There's a couple of things I'm trying to figure out.

1. How do I go about finding out more about PM&R? I'm in an IM program, would it be reasonable to ask my PD if s/he will let me do an elective in it? (s/he already knows I'm leaving IM). How did you learn more about PM&R?

2. For those who switched: what made you choose PM&R? How did you do it? Are you happy with your choice? Do you have any tips for me?

3. Finally, how do I find out if any PM&R spots are available. I've already tried the residencyswap etc... not to mention that I e-mailed a ton of programs (if you're a PD...yes you probably got an e-mail from me 😀) but got no response other than "thank you for your interest." One program told me that funding will be an issue. Is there a way around this?

Keep trying to contact programs. I'd suggest do so right after the match especially. Some programs may choose to keep spots open for switchers like you instead of scrambling...but there really aren't that many non-matching spots. ALSO, some programs may happen to expand the number of spots after the match.

there are 3 pgy2's at the so cal hospital i am rotating at that all switched from other programs (IM, rads, gen surg) to PM&R.

all 3 have personally expressed to me how they are much happier now.
