Hi all!

I am currently a PGY1 Internal medicine resident, and would love to change my specialty to Psychiatry, the problem is, I don't want to risk my current IM position.
There is always a chance that I end up not matching in psychiatry, and if my program knew my intentions, they might not renew my contract.
Is there a safe way to switch specialty, will the psychiatric programs contact my current IM program to ask about my evals or even to get some LORs? so my intentions will be revealed?
What should I do to switch my specialty safely?

Thank you so much in advance

If you're going to apply for another residency position you're going to need a LOR from your current program director.

So yes, your current IM program will be contacted. No way to do this "on the DL."

You should do a search. This is a frequently asked question.
