Hi,

I am wondering how many people ended up retracting an acceptance to one school when they found out they got into another (preferable) school? Could you share your stories - why you chose the school you did, how you broke it to the rejected school, and how they took it?

Thanks!

Well, this can be an easy or a hard thing to do! When I first found out I was accepted to Western and Oklahoma (and waitlisted at Mississippi State and at my state school UF...which i preferred...) I accepted at Oklahoma and sent in an "i decline my spot" letter to Western. Which was easy because they provided it in their acceptance letter. I got into Mississippi soon after the deadline (and sent in *another* $500!) and since I preferred Mississippi, sent an email off to Oklahoma saying "I have decided to go somewhere else".

A few weeks later I got into my state school (and number one choice), so I had to send in another email to Mississippi saying "sorry I decline"...it was a little harder with Mississippi since we had been corresponding back and forth and I had already sent in my deposit and stuff, but they were *very* understanding! I sent an email explaining the financial and family issues that were factored into my decision to stay at UF and it was fine! So don't worry!

I chose Oklahoma over Western because of two reasons...the financial situation and the fact that I didn't think I could learn as well in the program they offered as I could at Oklahoma. I chose Mississippi over Oklahoma because I'd actually been there and *realllly* liked it (granted, I probably should have visited Oklahoma before making this decision, but I felt it was closer to home and I had just felt so right there that the decision was made in my heart already ;-)).

Choosing between Mississippi and UF was really hard and really easy at the same time. It was easy in that UF was my number one choice from the beginning, and I knew (from firsthand) that it was a great school in a great town and I would have a great time here and get an excellent education...but part of me felt that living somewhere new and trying something different could be just as worthwhile. In the end, my faith in UF's academics and the fact that its just way cheaper and way closer to home were the major factors in me choosing to stay here. I don't regret it for a second, though I will always have warm and fuzzy feelings for Mississippi State!

Hope this helps!
