Charged with soliciting a prostitute, game over?

Before you are quick to judge me, I would like to tell my story. I recently had a very nasty breakup, and went through pretty severe depression right after. At my lowest point, I felt so alone that I needed to be with someone. I looked at the classifieds, and found someone. I went to a nearby hotel, only to realize that I walked directly into a police sting operation. I have never done this before, and paid the ultimate price. 🙁

With video tape evidence, I stood no chance. I was found guilty of soliciting a prostitute, which is a misdemeanor crime. Do you think any ADCOM would be able to look past this? I know that a lot of people see this as a victimless crime. I can explain what happened to me during that time. I was wondering if there is still hope in gaining admission to medical school with this on my record. I will try to get it expunged, but I have no idea how long this will take to do. I heard it can take years.

Since then, I have seen a psychiatrist, and have been treated for depression. I have never been convicted of any other crimes. I currently have a high cGPA of around a 3.8 and sGPA of around a 3.6. I attend a top 50 university. I have been partaking in extraordinary ECs too. Do I stand a chance with this on my record, or should I wait it out until I can have it expunged? And please don't judge, most people have no idea how hard breakups and depression can get.

I can't answer your question. But you could take steps to show that you are working to reverse what you've done. For example, you could work in a women's shelter. When you discuss your case, do not make any excuses. You're not the first guy to solicit a prostitute, but it's not a characteristic that most patients want in their doctors nor a characteristic medical schools want in their students. Tough road ahead, but not impossible.

That sounds like a good idea. I can look at women's shelters. I take full responsibility for my actions, but would an ADCOM even care? There are plenty of applicants who don't have a red flag on their application.

Well I went to a psychiatrist after, who diagnosed me with severe depression. The breakup definitely triggered something in me. I have been doing better on an SSRI. If I pursue counseling, I am wondering if this can help prove that I am getting my life together.

I've heard from a mentor that mentioning depression in your application is a big no-no as it unfortunately still carries a lot of stigma. Not sure how this incident will affect your chances, but I wouldn't try to use depression as your reason or excuse. It makes a bad situation worse imo..

I'm not sure what depression would do as a standalone on the application, but I think that mentioning that depression led to this can make it look like an excuse. I doubt any ADCOM would like to see that. I'm ready to take the blame if I need to. I am going to call a lawyer today and talk about getting this expunged, if possible.

If you're not, you need to address what drove you to solicit a prostitute, and show that you've grown from it. I don't know what your chances will be, since this type of crime calls your character into question, which is definitely not optimal for a potential physician.

As for getting the charge expunged, I'm not sure as to what chances you'll have for that either, since you had incriminating video evidence. It would look a lot better expunged, but I'm not sure how you'd be able to get that done. Get a good lawyer for that, they'd know better than most of us on here.

Well the breakup and untreated depression drove me to do it. I am not some habitual user. This was a one time thing. But now it sounds like I'm making excuses.

Your response already shows some promise- you admit that you've done something wrong and you're trying not to make excuses for yourself. That's the best attitude to have, given the situation. I agree with a previous poster in that volunteering at a woman's shelter would do a world of good. Keep the depression under control and do some volunteer work is your best course of action at this point.

Ummm they do background checks whenever you want to volunteer with vulnerable populations. It is unlikely that you will be able to volunteer at a women's shelter. Not impossible, but unlikely. Just be aware of that going in.

Edit: Sorry, I guess I should add something helpful. Get that lawyer and get this thing expunged. If I was an adcom, there is no way I would let you in right now, no matter where you've volunteered. Put some years between you and this incident, with lots of stuff to show you're back in control. It might still be possible down the road, but it's not right now.
 
First off, good for you for going to a counselor and working on your depression. I agree you should not mention psychiatric issues in your application. First, focus on getting the charge expunged. As another poster suggested, try volunteering at a women's shelter or clinic to show that you are trying to atone for your mistake in case the charges are not expunged. When are you planning to apply?

I think the posters saying not to mention psychiatric issues are probably correct. I will not talk about that, especially if it looks like I'm trying to come up with an excuse. A background check could negatively affect me trying to get a position in a women's shelter. I wanted to apply for the next cycle, but will consult with a lawyer and see if I can get it expunged. If that's the case, I will wait it out. I don't want medical schools to have a record of this when there is a high probability of being rejected outright. This will follow me for a while. 🙁

It's not unheard of for people to alt to ask a somewhat....embarrassing question.
 
If it is any consolation, the vast majority of pre-meds do not make it in anyways. So "cost me my future" may be a bit of an overstatement 🙂

Unless you get this expunged I dont see any adcom looking past this. I guess that's just my opinion though...

Is it just me or, on the grand scheme of potential crimes, does this seem like not such a big deal? (whether or not its a troll post this point stands). I mean, you got caught for something that happens to not be legal where you are, but is legal elsewhere. That seems like a good litmus test for how serious of a crime something is.

It's a misdemeanor, and not a felony. DUIs are also misdemeanors, and it looks like they can follow you for a long time. In some states, a speeding ticket is a misdemeanor. It's amazing how one misdemeanor can be no big deal, and another can jeopardize everything. I'll see what happens.

The pre-meds I met at my school typically quit a couple years in. I am or at least was looking forward to taking the MCAT in the near future. I already finished up most classes with flying colors. It's a different situation than the pre-med who ends up bombing chemistry and pursuing something different.

In some states, speeding tickets CAN be felonies (Virginia and Georgia, for example). A buddy witnessed someone being sent to jail for going 92 in a 65 in VA. He went to court without representation. I have gone 90+ several times in my previous relatively fast car before it broke down (VW GTI), although I don't drive as fast these days *shrugs*

Here's how I see this and other issues that must be reported on the AMCAS: would a medical school dismiss or suspend a current medical student who was caught doing the same? would a licensing board pull or suspend the license of a physician who was caught doing the same?

If you think that someone would be kicked out of medical school or (temporarily or permanently) lose a medical license over this behavior, then it is likely to be "game over" for a medical school applicant. If you could see a school or licensing board giving a med student/physician a pass for said behavior, then you can hope that some medical schools will be similarly inclined in considering your application for admission.

LOL did the fact that an illegal act was in the classifieds not tip you off? The cops probably laughed their asses off all the way back to the station.

Good point. I was actually wondering about this. Even if it were expunged, it would still need to be reported to the licensing board. It would be horrible to go through four years, only to hit a massive road block like that. But honestly, I'm not sure what they would do. I searched the site, and found lots of posts regarding DUI arrests, other misdemeanors, and even felonies!

Men paying for sex is actually the norm (with very few exceptions). It's just that the payment is always indirect for it to be socially acceptable - in the form of meals, cover charges, drinks, gifts, etc. Not to mention in marriage where the woman basically uses the man's income to buy inane things in exchange for sex a few times a week...if he's lucky.

If you look at the classified section of any major metropolitan daily tabloid you'll find hundreds of ads for prostitution.

Anyway, your best bet by far is to get this expunged. Getting into med school won't be the end of this, you'll have to deal with it again and again when you apply for a residency, fellowship, licensing, and any new job as a physician. Best to understand that before you start down this road, especially if you're interested in a competitive specialty.
 
If a physician (let's say someone from out of town, attending a convention) were to be swept up in a prostitution sting, do you expect that the state licensing board would revoke his medical license?

The only way I'd see that happening is if the girl was underage and he knew it.

The Caribbean is a possibility. I'd rather not take that road, but if it's my only shot, I might do it. Like they say, it's some peoples' last chance! I'll see how quickly, if possible, I can get this expunged.

The only reason it's a big deal is because so many people are trying to get into medical school.

A red flag like this might make it easy to eliminate you from the applicant pool. It doesn't help that something like this is extremely uncommon, and for any type of religious person, feminist, ect. it will be a huge "no-no".

Good luck though. If you desperately want to go into medicine, I wouldn't let this hold you back.
 
Lol, just so everyone knows, "soliciting a prostitute" is the fancy legal term for "pimping". :laugh:
 
Problem is the same for you as it is for people with academic misconduct. There are plenty of applicants that didn't solicit sex with a prostitute that they could easily pick over you. Why take you when there are most likely 3000 others that have a squeaky clean record.
