Hypothetical situation: A patient goes to a neurologist for a CC of headaches. The patient brings with him films from a previous MRI and the radiologists report.

Can the neurologist bill for reading the MRI's?

Or can the neurologist only bill for a general visit?

I used to think it was only bill for the visit, but after interviewing at Vandy, they seem to have some accredidation place that accredits neurologists for reading films, and can then bill for the read. Don't know if they actually get paid for it though. (and it seems they were having some of their residents get this accredidation too for scans read through residency)

if it's already read by a radiologist, that seems unlikely. just a guess. the insurance company MAY view neurologist readings equivalent, but not superior. So why would they pay twice?
