Looks like average step scores are up across the board. Rad Onc now weighs in at 240...

Interesting to see more recent data!

Looks like the Flynn effect applies to medical students too. Although some of that might not be an increase in intelligence, but simply a change in the supply and demand curve, better study prep, etc.

Thanks for sharing the link. It's pretty interesting seeing this data, especially since I am, for once, one of the data points!! Rad Onc is getting super competitive. Avg Step 1 of 240 for the matched US seniors ranks up there with Plastics, Ortho, and Derm; the highest % of PhDs in the market (as we had last time), most amount of published work, etc... Decent jump in people with > 260's Step 1 as well...

Ortho was particularly brutal this year. I know several very qualified people who didn't match. I'm curious about what exactly started this upward statistical shift in rad onc. Attending at an interview was convinced it started with increased billing for IMRT. Just seems like a much more interesting field than it was in the days of grease pencils and x ray films.

Yea I met an attending at an interview who thought the same. Then again, I met a few other "younger" attendings who partially attributed it to the increasing exposure of the field to med students (at Case Western apparently, med students can choose Rad Onc as one of their General Surgery Core Rotation blocks in 3rd yr).
