Just starting dental school in the fall, i don't have a computer and am looking to buy one. Is there any reason not to buy a cheap $300 to $400 computer like a toshiba notebook or an acer? I'm not very technologically savvy. What do you think is needed in a computer for dental school?

Internet and microsoft office is all I used mine for. A cheap computer will work fine.

I have used a $350 dollar 15.6" Toshiba laptop without any problems. I can do everything I need on the computer - Microsoft Office documents, internet, e-mail, and have access to electronic dental records. That is all I need. Plus, it can play any game on Miniclip which I find a necessity at times in a few courses.

i don't think you need a high end one but i would recommend a light one with a good battery life since you will be carrying it all the time.

talk to your school's IT department. My school had a set of 'minimum' requirements that were necessary to run the software we would be using.

This is what I would recommend.

15" screen, plenty of power, cheap price, i3 processor. Not sure about the battery life, but check with your school to see if you have power plugs in the seating areas. If not, you might want to get one with a longer battery life.

I suspect that everything you do in dental school will work with a cheap computer. But... if you are going to using any CAD-CAM software that uses 3-D imaging you may need a little more power.

But I bet a cheap computer could do that too.

Honestly you should call your schools IT department and ask them if they have any minimum requirements. Our school made us buy the computer of their choice.
