Wow - lots of questions! For 2001/2002, the Expense Sheet only lists tuition for residents and non-residents. I'm going to assume Canadians are non-residents. For non-residents, tuition is $22,940 per year. Other mandatory expenses come to $11,716. They allot $11,188 for living expenses. The total for a nonresident is $45,844, but that would be if you actually used all the money they allot for living. The four year total for a non-resident is $167,515 - again, that is if you use all the money alloted for living. But keep in mind, the tuition usually goes up a little each year, so add like $5000 to that number. But cost of living in Buffalo is way cheaper than say NYC or Boston, keep that in mind. Those are all the costs in US dollars.
I really like the school. From reading this board, I would have to say we are more clinically oriented. Most of the students are from NY state. Most of them will stay in NY. I agree, your GPA is really good and the shadowing is a plus since they will ask you the "Why do you wanna be a dentist" question in some form. I don't know what DAT score is considered to be good at our school. I don't have any experience with the DAT and what is a good or bad score for UB. I do know the PAT average is around 18, but I'm not sure how that applies to Canadians since your PAT is a little different. You could always make the argument that you have really good grades and the DAT are just a one day thing and here is why I know I can handle dental school, etc.
There was a post two weeks ago that gave the average GPAs and DATs of all the US dental schools - check that for more info.
I also don't know the exact deadline for applications. Once you're in, you don't really think about these things anymore. I see students being interviewed starting around October and going on until Feb or March. I would think the earlier the better, but I know someone who submitted the app really close to the deadline (late Jan/early Feb, I think) and still got in b/c of a strong GPA/DAT.
If you end up coming here, I guarantee there will be other Canadians in your class. There are a few in my class and even more in the first year class. Big hockey fans! Once you see our clinics, you will absolutely love this school. Dental school will be hard wherever you go. I am really enjoying the experience at UB.
Feel free to ask any other questions you may have. Call or e-mail the school for more info - www.sdm.buffalo.edu
